Mildura-Coomealla Cycling Club

Merbein, Victoria, July 2, 2005

By Peter Winton

Under overcast skies and cold conditions local cyclists took to the windy environs of rural Merbein for this weekend's dose of competitive action. Scratch races in A, B and C grades were the programmed events. A grade lined up with current club champion Errol Schmidt, Kevin Tankard, Michael Murdoch and Sean Gallagher ready to do business. Missing from this pack were Scott Giles, Ian Brade and Richard Hale. 8 laps of the 8km circuit for all riders was the target and it was Michael Murdoch again too strong for Kev Tankard over the last 50 metres with Errol Schmidt in 3rd place.

B grade group was a little greater in number with 12 riders ready to go. Michael Shipsides (last week's handicap race winner), Ian Beruldsen, Jack Lokan, Rob Akkermans, Jeff Mitchell, Greg Scott, Harry Robbins, Adrian Lloyd, Peter Doody, Dion Bassi-Anstee and Peter Winton (making yet another comeback from calamity). Missing from this bunch were David Priest, Sam Priest, Stephanie Frawley, Cam Crothers, Kev Gregory and Ian Japp. The first three riders across the line after the obligatory 64 kilometres were all sprinters; Rob Akkermans, Ian Beruldsen and Michael Shipsides, with club stalwart and coach Jack Lokan in fourth. Bassi-Anstee and Winton failed to complete the required laps.

Paul Hicks, Peter Sargeant, Adrian Richardson, Joe Monteleone, Col Rodger and new member Gary Pitt formed the C grade contingent. Missing in action from this sturdy bunch were Tom Athorn, Sandra Girvan and Linda McConachie. Paul Hicks paced himself exceptionally well and proved his level of fitness superior to his colleagues with a strong and sustained sprint to the line to win convincingly from Adrian Richardson with more daylight to Peter Sargeant. New rider Garry Pitt impressed with his first hitout in competitive cycling by sticking with the leading trio right to the end. Joe Monteleone and Col Rodger yet again showed their doggedness by not giving in and a bunch finish for both is not far off.

Next week's race is at the Arumpo Road circuit (Mourquong, NSW), a much shorter 38km handicap. Start time is the regular 1:30pm. Club championships are on soon (July 16) and all riders are reminded of the five-race qualifying requirement.
