Another huge turn out for the weekly speed fest at Glenvale Crescent, with well over 200 hundred riders on the start line, including very healthy bunches for both D Grade and the E Grade Novice race.
Ray Turner (Bianchi) was back to his old tricks, taking a flier off the start line in A Grade that saw him the length of the straight clear by the end of the opening lap. Andrew Steele tried to join the move, but just hastened the inevitable chase, and by the end of the next lap the bunch was intact. After a number of high paced laps with Robert Crowe (HLP/Ridewiser) setting the tempo, a small split appeared in the bunch. Without really attacking, nine riders went clear and no one in the bunch seemed willing to close the gap. The break was quick to capitalise, and by the time the pace came back on behind them they were pretty well home free. Joining Crowe was team mate Aaron Salisbury, Tommy Nankervis (Fitzroy Cycles), VIS pair Sean Finning and Richard England, Reece Van Beek, Turner, Matt Jones and David Sturt (Giant/Pro-Motion).
Robert Tighello (Richmond Cyclery) made a determined effort to bridge with Danny Kah, Dennis Markouris (Giramondo) and Andrew Aquilina, but was unable to close the gap to the flying leaders. Finning tried to surprise his breakaway companions with an attack down the back straight on bell lap, but was quickly chased down by Crowe, trying to set things up for his team mate. England dived underneath at the penultimate corner, with Sturt and Nankervis following, allowing Nankervis to sprint to his sixth win of the season, holding off a determined Salisbury by half a wheel.
Julian Dutton (BikeNOW) will make the move to A Grade after taking out the B Grade sprint from Boon Chia (Team Alex) and Paul Logan. Dutton, a former rower, has shown amazing strength in his first few rides, and with some tactical advice from the rest of the BikeNOW stable has taken to the big fields with surprising ease. A touch of wheels on the final lap took a few riders down, but seemed a little inevitable with the huge field bunched up in the final laps and no sign of the usual lead out train to keep things strung out. Swiss rider Christiane Soeder (Univega) avoided the carnage to claim the leading Women's prize ahead of Mary Rogers and Rebecca McConnell (Bicycle Superstore).
Richard Buckingham and Dean Stewart held a good break on the C Grade bunch for most of the second half of the race, and were joined on the final two laps by Scott Setford and Stewart Birnie. Despite the fresh legs, the bunch closed in for the kill, reeling in the leaders on the final lap, and setting things up for the sprinters. Daniel Loy came over the top of Tom Gallagher (Inexa-Team Alex) in the final twenty metres to claim the win, with Nick Palecek and Bob Kelly leaving their efforts just too late. Michelle Murrell was too strong for Bee Hansen and Andrea Bishop in the Women's division.
Blackburn junior Tom Robinson was too quick in the D Grade bunch sprint, holding off Alister Stewart and Michael Milewski, with Celia Vandestadt taking a well deserved win in the Women's division after spending virtually the entire race in the first three riders. Tommy Nankervis has moved into the lead of the $7000 Inexa - Team Alex Summer Series, and holds a one point lead over Michael Thomas. Wayne Andrew, Tom Walker and Aaron Salisbury are all within striking distance, while Women's leader Andrea Bishop has a comfortable lead over Louisa Judd and is closing in the on the outright leaders.
Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Tuesday night with Twilight Racing at Sandown starting at 6.30pm for all grades, with access to the circuit via Sandown Road from 6pm. Sunday mornings are usually at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2). C, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and B Grade ride at 10am, although all riders are reminded that the CCCC race on Sunday February 13 will be held in Fitzroy Street, St Kilda as part of the famous St Kilda Festival. All holders of 2005 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20.. For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts novice racing clinics at Glenvale Crescent.
