Stan Robins Memorial Race

Perth-Campbelltown, Tasmania, February 26, 2005

Hadspen's Karl Menzies showed he has plenty of good form to take on his upcoming trip to America by winning Saturday's Stan Robins Memorial race between Perth and Cambelltown.

Strong winds and hot conditions made it a hard day for the 60 riders in the 90km race, who were split into three grades, with C grade given ten minutes headstart. Menzies started in the powerful scratch bunch, which quickly gobbled up the frontmarkers' advantage, and with 50 km remaining it was an all up field.

Attacks came constantly and a strong group of five riders jumped clear, including Menzies, Nathan Clarke, Matt Goss, Mark Jamieson and Josh Wilson. These riders quickly built up a good break and looked to have the race in their keeping. The chase bunch kept working hard and eventually brought the breakaways back, however, the same five riders got clear almost straight away, with Jarrod Harmon joining in.

Mark Jamieson broke away solo with 10km remaining, but was chased down by Menzies, with Clarke counter attacking, but Menzies also brought him back to the bunch, before launching an attack of his own on the downhill run to the finish. Menzies quickly opened up a winning gap and was never challenged, crossing the line with his arms raised, followed home by Jamieson and Clarke.

Grace Sulzberger continued her recent good form to be the the first female home, with former national representative Emily Williams second in her comeback, and Kate Warren third.
