'Brutus' the victor as C Grade takes line honours

After narrowly missing out last week, C grade strongman Chris 'Brutus' Reynolds (Randwick Botany) made sure of the win this week, when he comfortably outsprinted a C grade field which had stayed away from the fast finishing A and B grade bunch in round 7 of the Trek Bike Summer Series.
The win catapults him into second spot in the series point score, seven points behind the co-leaders Anthony Spurgeon (Colnago-Caravello) and Stewart Campbell (Easts) who both missed out on a top five placings and valuable series points in the race for the series first prize of a Trek Madone 5.9 frame.
The battle for club honours is also delicately poised with host club Eastern Suburbs only managing two wins in seven races. Club mentor and coach to the stars, Francesco Conceicao will be keeping a close eye on the handicap times as he works out way to combat the threat of Colnago-Caravello's King Spurge for the series lead and Randwick Botany's super vet, Liam Kelly's hold in the Sprint King Competition. Easts still lead the C grade competition, but even that is looking shaky as Brutus Reynoldus is going to be hard to stop in the remaining five weeks, that's if he keeps his C grade starting spot.

C Grade still had the upper hand by again managing to stay away, just, for the entire 15 laps. Their strength is in their numbers with over 35 riders in the bunch, which, combined with a hot night and little wind, helped their chances of taking line honours. Also helping them was former AIS endurance track rider from the 90's, Nathan Page, making a comeback to racing after 10 years - he's already eyeing a B grade start next week. The small A grade bunch of 10 riders were driven primarily by the Colnago-Caravello squadra of Jose Rodriguez, Ben Isaksen and Anthony Challinor ,together with the Easts duo of Stuart Dangerfield and Paul Rowney. Despite an energetic start from B grade, the two groups were together with five laps to go, but at the bell it was obvious the honours and the money were going to C grade.
Judging by the photo, it was Chris Reynolds all the way - they don't call him Brutus for nothing. What was impressive was 14-year-old, schoolboy Luke Davison (Randwick Botany), finishing second in front of some far more experienced rivals and giving Randwick Botany a one-two finish for the night. Richard Dodds (Sydney) finished in the placings this week, after his sixth place last week. Todd Dunn (Easts) was in the money for fourth but out of the points, while yet another generation of Cridland's, 15-year-old Jonathon (Southern Cross) grabbed fifth spot. In the sprint finale for A and B grade, Liam Kelly gave Randwick Botany another win in A grade while in B grade, John Kenny notched up another win and must be wondering what he has to do to get promoted to A grade after placing in every B grade finish for six consecutive weeks.
