Campbell wins with an awesome last lap

Stewart Campbell (Easts) unleashed an impressive display of power riding to single-handedly chase down the 30 strong C grade bunch on the last lap and then snatch an emphatic victory on the line in round 6 of the Trek Bikes Summer Series on Tuesday night. The win now places him equal first with Anthony Spurgeon (Colnago - Caravello) in the race for the series first prize of a Trek Madone 5.9 frame, and has opened up the competition with another six races left.

After an extremely hot day in Sydney which saw the city temperature reach 39.5o in the afternoon, a field of almost 90 riders were on the start line to give it their best shot at Heffron Park. With local track stars all on duty in Adelaide for the National Track Titles, another small A grade bunch of only 10 riders had the unenviable task of closing the gap on 76 riders in the B and C grade groups. As more elite riders head back to their overseas teams in the coming weeks, the competition all of sudden looks to be in favour of C grade - however, the handicapper will no doubt ensure that racing is kept fair and equitable for all grades.

A grade blew out of the blocks with Jose Rodriguez (Colnago - Caravello) ripping into a one-lap turn. Big Troy Glennan (MG X Power) then kept the pressure on and by lap two, half the A grade bunch were out of the race, including Spurge, Rodriguez and Jeff Hopkins. This left Big Troy, team mate Shaun Higgerson, Liam Kelly (Randwick Botany) and Campbell to set off in pursuit of B grade, who were easily caught just after the sprint prime at seven laps to go.

The sprint points were gobbled up by a small B grade breakaway of Nic Rathborne (Easts) and Andrew Kilday (St George) who rode very aggressively in the opening laps. The remaining sprint primes were split between Big Troy and Computer, with Liam Kelly just sneaking in a valuable second place to hold onto his Sprint King lead by one point from Campbell. Two laps to go and the massive C grade bunch still looked like they might stay away for the win for the second consecutive week, especially with the chasing A and B grade riders now down to only three of the original A grade break (Kelly retired feeling ill) and five B grade riders - the 'eastern bloc' of Scott Callum, John Kenny, Alan Bozunovic and Trent Iliffe, John Sunde (St George) and David McHugh (Sydney).

The race then came alight on the bell lap when Campbell set off on an incredibly focused chase for C grade. With over 500m to cover in 2km, he not only caught the massive bunch, but managed to manoeuvre a path through the entire bunch to storm home and catch a slightly surprised Chris Reynolds (Randwick Botany) just before the line. It was a vintage Computer performance - he has tried similar attacks in recent weeks, but with no success - this was the one which paid off big time, putting him equal first in the Series and only one point shy of the lead in the Sprint King comp.

In the minor placings, Adam Shepherd (Sydney) took third place, proving he's recovered from his recent fall, while Sam Carroll (Lidcombe) earned a well deserved spot after some recent strong races. Rodney Mendes rounded off the podium with fifth. Richard Dodds (Easts) picked up the envelope for 1st C grade (not placed in the top 5) and the ever present Irishman accounted for his B grade companions to notch up another B grade win. The C grade pointscore remains the same with the two leaders Todd Dunn and Tom Reid both finishing out of the placings, depsite Reid repeatedly attacking the C grade bunch in the closing laps.
