Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Mildura-Coomealla Cycling ClubArumpo Road, Victoria, August 27, 2005By Peter Winton A Grade Kev Tankard put himself back in the winners circle in the M-CCC A grade scratch race on Saturday. The new national duathlon King teamed up with visitng rider and former local, David Tozer, in a break-away effort from the half-way point to open a gap between themselves and the challengers, Scott Giles, Michael Murdoch, Peter Mulhearn, Richard Hale and Sean Gallagher. As the other graded races crossed on the opposite side of the road it was just like old times at the Club, with the little engine and the big engine (Club pet-names) right on each others' hammer. As the A grade race got underway it was Tozer hitting the pedal hard to fire up his race average speed and get the mind right for his second tilt at the Tour of the Murray River (commencing this Wednesday). Idle riders waiting on the line commented upon Sean Gallaghers' slow get away and the fact he was in for a 37km individual time trial as a result. B Grade The word was out that 'IrishOz' was taking no prisoners today and the Coach had already made his statement a week ago that 'someone will pay!' With this utmost in rider's minds there was a touch of twitch in the Club's core group. Not far into the program Dion Bassi-Anstee had forgotten to bring a hankie, so he turned tail for the safety of the start/finish line. Maybe he couldn't get Courtney off his mind? That man Mills was amongst the riders today, another recently crowned national duathlon champ, and he attempted to make a name for himself with a lone attack on the bunch. He failed, as they almost all do at home. Same went for Jeff Mitchell, who surged away before the half-way turn. The pack got into the big chain ring and took up the chase. Somewhere along the way the speed touched on 60 kliks and boy it felt good, those northerly winds do have their attractive attributes. Greg Scott was the next to try his luck and he scooted away without much reaction from the throng. A bold effort it was too and very nearly successful. He was caught only 2kns from home after a concerted effort by Rob Akkermans, Peter Doody, Winton and Peter Mills to raise everyone's awareness. A solid bunch sprint ensued with Jack Lokan relishing in the spoils. C Grade Garry Pitt, Tom Athorn and Joe Monteleone all deserve a medal for their attendance each week in perhaps the most difficult task of only three or so riders at their end to share the experience. Garry Pitt proved he isn't far away from an elevation up the order with an easy victory over Tom and Joe. Next week is the climax of the season, a 40 minute kermesse or criterium in Mildura as part of the shenanigans for the last stage of the Tour of the Murray River.
