The threat of these two ascents kept most of the usual limit riders away from the race. The eight strong limit bunch were thrown into disarray when a touch of wheels effectively split the bunch in two before the first ascent of the shallow side of Marshal Mount Hall. Terechovs rode strongly at the head of the race from this point onwards. Megan Wilkie, Peter Vesel and Tony Burke regrouped to form a chasing bunch and despite never giving up could not catch the leaders. Richie Lorenc, Joe Williams, Tony Stephenson and Joe Chiaverini starting three minutes from limit, combined well to catch the Wilkie, Vesel and Burke group along with Phil Jones and Carlo Paiola just before turning at the end of the first lap. Dave Russell, known for liking a tough time trial, decided to set off on his own from the seven minute bunch. Chiaverini could see the danger Russell presented and he became the group motivator trying to make sure the group kept working together. Meanwhile block riders Jeff Gray and Mark Davis were determined not to let the scratch riders catch them. Riding strongly despite the block bunch breaking up, the pair caught the second block bunch which had struggled in the wind and then the remainder of Russell's seven minute group. With Terchovs unlikely to be caught the race was now on for second place. Gray and Davis picked up Dean Kelly and headed in to the last two kilometres only a few hundred metres behind Russell who in turn could almost touch the group ahead, but the strong westerly head wind prevented the gaps from being bridged. Lorenc sprinted home for second place with Chiaverini, Paiola and Burke taking the minor placings. Russell crossed the line 32 seconds later and Davis, Gray and Kelly finished a further 25 seconds in arrears. Fastest time went to recent Barbara Wyles Handicap winner Mark Jewel with Graham Rutter second fastest and Craig Paull third all in the same time of 1:26:32.
