Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Southern Vets CCClub Handicap Event, Sunday, September 26, 2004Russell makes it three in a rowBy Barry Timmins James Russell made it three wins in a row this weekend taking out the club handicap event in very windy and hot conditions over a demanding course. He worked once again with rival John Giles powering their way through the field over the 50km course dragging back a handicap time of 35 minutes for the out markers. Despite some healthy sized groups no peloton emerged and the scratch riders worked their way methodically through claiming the front runners on the final shorter lap. Russell has continued to pressure Giles who leads the club rankings but although Russell now has a clear margin on the number of wins this year Giles is always in with a chance to claim victory himself. Giles will be hard to catch this year especially if he continues to follow Russell to line. Russell needs to have some events without Giles being able to claim a place which on this seasons form seems most unlikely. Russell concentrated on riding in the South Australian Open division earlier in the year and will find it difficult to make up the ground he has lost on Giles. His win today takes him to six victories for the year (the most in the club) and moves him in to third on the club rankings four major results behind Giles. Kate Logan was the only other rider to improve her ranking taking a well deserved fourth place moving her total to seven two behind the third placed Russell. Kate Logan is having her best season ever with the club with seven major results so far. She has the club double holding the road race and time trial championships in female category five and has the State road race title in this division making a very impressive trio of gold medals this year. Her best year prior to this was in 2002 when she was able to claim five major places that included two victories. Russell began his run of victories back in July with a win to claim the Club Road Race Championship. Since winning that he has not looked back taking six wins in row one of which was the State Road race title in Men Category One(35-39years old) John Giles now has thirteen major results for the year and holds the State title in Men category four (50 to 54 years) in the road race. Although Mr Giles will not like this comment he is performing exceptionally well against much younger opposition and deserves to take out the club rankings this year. The remaining places today went to new riders with the club a comment that has frequently been made this season and indicates the healthy state of the club. Peter Hedger broke through for an impressive third place with Mike Ward claiming fifth.
