Sponsored by Melbourne's leading car parts self salvage yard, the field tackled two laps of the hilly Modella circuit featuring the climbs of Heath Hill and Ripplebrook. A relatively inexperienced Limit bunch were joined by promising juniors Joel Rogers and Dean Berry; although the youngsters were forbidden from starting the second lap, their contribution helped the outmarkers maintain most of their ten minute advantage to the next group until their retirement. At the start of the second lap, five Limit riders survived: Tom Gallagher (Team Alex), Louisa Judd, Lisa Friend (Bianchi), Nick Palecek and Roger Lancaster (Cadbury/Schwepes). The 17 Minute bunch was at seven minutes and had lost a few riders; while the 11 and 7 Minutes bunches were about to amalgamate a further three minutes behind. The 3 Minute bunch had lost a little time to the charging riders in front, and was barely a minute ahead of the scratchies, powered by Barcelona Olympian Robert Crowe (RideWiser). Crowe was getting in one last hit out before flying to the Athens Paralympics on Sunday, where he will pilot a tandem for Kieran Modra. Despite the best efforts of the chasers, the time gaps were too big to make up in the still conditions, and the five Limit riders rounded the final turn over two minutes clear. Tom Gallagher sprinted to a convincing win ahead of Louisa Judd, a hunger flat Lisa Friend and Palecek. Lancaster lost contact in the closing stages but hung on to claim fifth a few seconds ahead of the main bunch. Fastest time went to big Crowey, from Matt Lloyd (Kathy Watt's Personal Training) and Murray Spink (Giant Bicycles) three and half minutes behind the winner. As usual, racing would not have been possible without the support of volunteers: Traffic Controllers Bob Johnstone and Mike Goldie; Corner Marshals Mick Cummings, John Fold, Ken Stewart, Andrew Donohue and Gemma Goyne; support drivers Warren Cay, Trish Judd, Tara Davis, Simon Bristow, Mark Howard, Jason Theobald and Leanne Sutton; and race assistant Heather Friend. Carnegie Caulfield's final road race for the season is the Club Road Championships on September 18 at the Modella circuit. The summer Criterium season will kick off at Glenvale Crescent on October 3.
