Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Southern Veterans Cycling ClubBarry Smith Memorial Invitational - South Australia, October 17, 2004Tagell wins Barry Smith Memorial and makes it two in a rowAfter finishing second in Division One in last weekend's Mount Compass Bicycle Express Open, Mick Tagell proved he is very much in form by winning Division One in the Barry Smith Memorial at Victor Harbor over the weekend. Tagell holds the State Champion's title in the time trial in age category three and has suddenly shown some striking form to take two very inspirational results in a fortnight. All of the major places came from a combined 11 and 14 minute pack that worked together well to keep the scratch riders at bay. Greg Chivers showed excellent skill to bridge the gap from his starting six minute group to grab seventh for his second result with the Southern Vets this year. Will McKay took second ahead of fellow mark Neville Elliot. Mc Kay will be very pleased as this is his first major result with the club. He secured an eighth place in the Twin Peaks in August. Elliot continues his very strong season, moving in to outright second on the leading riders table with eleven major results including this third for the year. Gavin McMahon made a return to the results list with a fourth - his first major result since July with the club. He has ten results for the season and will continue to be a threat to the leaders given this form. Patrick Houweling and Ray Deed took the remaining prizes on offer. Houweling has one other result - an impressive first in a club handicap earlier this year. Deed's taken a wealth of titles this season, both with the club and state. He is currently club and state champion in both the time trial and road race in his age division. The fastest time on the day in division one was no surprise with scratch rider James Russell claiming the honours on another day when the task was again a little too much for the hard working scratch team. Division Two provided an excellent win for Normanville rider Mary Callahan. Callahan has shown her best form to date with the club, equalling her previous best in 2003 with seven major results. This year she has already collected two victories and looks set to continue her rise up the table of consistency. Her remarkable effort saw her leave behind all her own group and lead the chasing pack home by a considerable distance on the line. Apart from a gallant effort from Geoff Hillman, who rode most of the race with Callahan to claim a sixth, the rest of the places came from a pack made up of riders from the seven and twelve minute groups who rode effectively together to deny scratch any opportunity in division two. Greg Hancox and Kent Dredge took second and third. Dredge was reliving his success in the 'Tour Down Under' veterans road race run over the same course in January and was following up his fourth place in the Bicycle Express Open last week. Hancox, in his first year with the club, has made a very notable start with one win, two seconds and a third so far. Carolyn Dangerfield, Robert de Ross and Brian Dey claimed the remaining prizes, with fastest time on the day going to scratch rider Greg Berryman. Wayne Stephens and Kate Logan collected prizes as the first unplaced over 60 and first unplaced female respectively.
The Barry Smith Memorial is an annual event in memory of Barry Joseph Smith, a stalwart Southern Districts Veterans and Ladies Cycling Club member tragically killed while cycling to work on the Lonsdale Highway in 2001. Trophies and prizes were presented by his widow Sandy Smith.
