A field of 138 Veteran riders faced the Starter at 10-00am. in cool misty conditions. The eleven scratch men including Robert Crowe fresh back from ther Athens Paralympic Games, conceded thirty eight minutes to the three limit riders. Conditions improved as the race progressed. With one limit rider Ian Jones holding the front position for thirty two kilometres, when he was caught by a sixty rider bunch, made up of 8.30, 10, 12, 14,16, 20, 28 minute bunches. It was evident at this point that the four back bunches would not figure in the finish. A fall in the large leading bunch ten kilometres form the finish when two riders fell Ray King and Terry Watchorn. In the run too the finish had the large field spread across the road with the eventual winner Terry Peters from 8-30 bunch breaking clear a hundred and fifty meters from the finish line and winning by five lengths from Theo Kapakoulakis 8.30 with Phil Godfrey 10minute bunch third. Scratch finished six minutes fifty-four sec. behind the winner, with Robert Crowe taking out fastest time from David Lunn.
