Sunny skies saw another big turn out as Melbourne's Crit season kicks off in a big way. A few of the top riders were having a well earned rest after an epic 299km Melbourne to Warnambool Classic the day before, but a surprising number backed up for an hour of speed work to stretch their legs after around eight hours in the saddle! Visiting South Australian Mathew Rex (SASI) started the attacks, taking Taigh Banson (CBD Cycles) along for the ride, but after a few laps off the front there was no sign of anyone bridging and the pack reformed. After a number of short lived moves, a big break went clear, and in a similar style to last week, the race was over for the rest of the bunch from that point. Rex and Banson made the break, as did Warren Knevitt and Rob Tidey (O'Mara Cycles), Cam Wise and David Sturt (Pro-Motion Bicycles), Simon Walker (Victorian State Home Loans), Tommy Nankervis (Fitzroy Cycles), Danny Kah, Nathan Wise (Lloyd Morgan/Bike Pro), Anthony Smith (Gran Prix Bicycles) and Matt Lloyd (Kathy Watt's Personal Training). At 'three to go', Kah rolled off the front, and opened a small gap. Sturt countered on the penultimate lap, only for Rex to pull him back as he tried to set things up for fellow South Australian Nankervis. Showing no sign of the lazy 300km he had raced the day before, Nankervis had little trouble finishing the job, taking the sprint comfortably from Nathan Wise, Walker and Tidey. After his convincing B Grade sprint win the week before, big track sprinter Jeremy McLay (Kennedy Cyle Fit) had been told he had one race left before promotion, and was determined to go out with a win. The big field was quick to chase down any attacks, playing into McLay's hands. Well positioned at the bell, McLay saw Stuart Bendall (Fitzroy Cycles) take a flier and set off in pursuit. His chase paid off, catching the rabbit in sight of the finish, and he looked set to rack up consecutive wins before hitting the wall in the final twenty metres. No amount of head stem biting could see McLay hold off a well timed sprint from Paul Mason, who took the win by inches, relegating McLay to second. Mountain biker Jarred Dwyer sprinted well into third, ahead of last week's second place finisher Adrian Hansen (Lloyd Morgan/Bike Pro). Cheryl Walker (Victorian State Home Loans) was once again quickest of the Women, with Gemma Goyne (BikeNOW) and Briana James (Drapac/Porsche) filling the minor places. C Grade saw an early solo attack from Darren Canute (Le Tour Cycles) hold off the bunch for fifteen minutes. Despite his early efforts, Canute was still strong enough to figure in the placings, with the win going to experienced Warragul veteran Chris Hunt (Kennedy Cyle Fit) from Andrew Burke and Canute. Ferne Walklate made it two from two in the Women's division, too strong for former Australian Junior Champion Brigid Farrell and Nikki Matthews (Bicycle Superstore). The D Grade bunch split midway through the race, with the leaders opening a half lap advantage by race end. First timer Neil Robinson took a convincing sprint win, from Nick Groves. Lachie Worn and John Groves. Louise Bourke finished with the leaders to take the Women's win, while Michelle Murrell was quickest from the second group. Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Sunday at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2). C, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and B Grade ride at 10am. Tuesday night Twilight Racing at Sandown will start on November 9. All holders of Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. 2005 licenses are also now available. For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts racing clinics in E Grade. For further details, go to www.carnegiecycling.com.au.
