Tooheys Tasmanian Criterium Championships

Devonport, Tasmania, November 27, 2004

By Rod Morris

Latrobe-based international Nathan Clarke has set the scene for a classic showdown in the Tooheys Tasmanian Criterium Championships after winning the second round in Devonport on Saturday. On a tight 100 m hot-dog circuit near Devonport's Mersey River, Clarke found something extra in a thrilling finish to win from the consistent Bernard Sulzberger and Round winner, Karl Menzies.

With only the final round at Ulverstone remaining on December 1, Clarke will carry a slender lead of just one point to Menzies, with Sulzberger hovering in third place, a further one point adrift.

The Devonport Criterium had a little bit of everything, with numerous attacks coming from the small but quality Elite field. Menzies tried an early attack but was soon reeled in, after it appeared he was having trouble with his cleats or pedals. Sulzberger was the next to attack, but a puncture curtailed his ambitions for at least one lap till he could regain his place in the bunch. Clarke summoned up his team of the Atkins brothers, Gareth and Matthew, along with Mark Jamieson, but again the opposition allowed them little room to move. Youngsters Ben Price, Josh Wilson and Jai Crawford ensured the older heads in the race would have to work hard for whatever spoils would come their way.

At a frenetic pace, particularly in the closing five laps, there were even more moves from the front group and at two to go, Clarke made his decisive race-winning move.

The tough circuit didn't suit every rider as the stop-start nature at each end had competitors working overtime to stay in touch with opponents. In the women's race, Louise Yaxley again demonstrated her outstanding class and form to win easily, lapping almost the entire field.

The Men's B Grade title is also wide open after Ulverstone's Kaidan Homan won Round to draw level with Round winner Jarrod Harman. The showdown on December 1 promises to be a beauty. It's a similar situation in the corresponding North-West Veterans titles, with Darren Pugh and Peter Gleeson level on points with one win and one second each. In the junior age groups, Daniel Jamieson is the hot favourite to win the U17, Andrew Smith looks the goods in U15 and Jake Laskey has won both U13 races so far. Tasmania's summer of cycling continues next weekend with the traditional George Town Track Carnival.
