Russell lifts the pressure

James Russell repeated last week's dazzling performance in the Koffee & Snax sponsored Scratch Races after another hard-hitting A grade encounter. The conditions were once again windy and cool for this time of the year, making the course challenging with an extensive climb up through Peters Creek. There seemed to be constant head winds no matter what direction the course took. Russell still did not make up any ground on Australian Champion Giles in the club standings, but the latest victory has cemented him as the most successful rider this season, with no one likely to challenge before years end due to his eight victories. His tally boasts 11 major results, with Giles ahead on 16. Watters made another appearance in a club event and moved his personal tally to seven major results this year, three of which are victories. The result did not look certain out on the course as Norman Hoy attempted a breakaway up the Peters Creek climb with Russell in tow, but the group caught the break during the downhill section, leaving the sprint to the big three.

B Grade saw victory go to Mike Ellaway, who is challenging for A grade status once again after two victories this year in B grade scratch events. He has equalled his best tally of victories in a season and continued with a very consistent approach, having won two events every year since 2001. Martin Refermat continues to improve with another impressive effort to take second. He is on the comeback but unlikely to match his record-breaking effort in 2002 when he was almost unbeatable in scratch events. Third place was yet another major result for Andrew Coombe. He could challenge his own inspirational record of ten results in a season with this form, as he moves to seven results, with a number of events still to come.

The C Grade race was deservedly taken by a hard working Justin Dawson, who broke through for his first victory with the Vets since 2001. His record of results this year is notable, with a tally of eight major results - his best on record in a year - but until now the win has alluded him. Stan Bastrias added another place to his tally, taking second. He was followed to the line by an in form Bernie Szantyr who claimed his sixth result of the season. In D grade new rider Mike Ward took his first victory with the club after starting late this year. He held out some very experienced riders with Paul Weatherall and David Cox claiming the minor places. Weatherall has now matched his best season with the club and looks on track to leave his 2002 milestone of seven victories behind him. Cox is in his second season with the club and has featured in the places five times this year. In E grade Dave Tyler signalled his return with only his second victory with Southern Vets; his first result for the year. He held out Tasmanian Phillip Whitney, who was riding with the club for the first time, and triple Australian Champion Carolyn Dangerfield.
