Mildura-Coomealla Cycling Club

Aus-link circuit, Mildura, November 14, 2004

On a cool and windy Sunday morning in Mildura, the Mildura - Coomealla Cycling Club conducted its first criterium for the summer season. With quite a number of A grade members away in Shepparton (Victoria) competing in a triathlon, the A-grade field was reduced to a two-rider event; Kevin Tankard and Steve Fenwick competing for the win.

In B grade the field was more substantial, with 11 riders fronting up for a 35 minute "burn". The C-grade field comprised Greg Kluske - returning from a collarbone injury two years ago - Robyn Doyle and Joe Monteleone. Five junior boys turned out for this race the first fair dinkum test of the new "off-road" circuit. No prizes for figuring out the winner of the A grade. Kevin Tankard took it from Steve Fenwick. The B grade group competed during the A grade race, lagging behind at the start by 30 seconds. Richard Hale managed to hold out Michael Shipsides by a half wheel in a race dominated by these two riders. Breaking away in the early laps, the first two placegetters and Harvey Dwyer put a big enough gap in the field to keep Peter Doody away. PD managed to gather in Dwyer in the latter stages and take fourth place but not before an excellent effort by Samuel Priest, who snuck away from his older colleagues to take third.

In C-grade, it was Greg Kluske from Robyn Doyle with Joe Monteleone in third. The junior boys had a taste of the criterium style for the first time, and although they seemed a little hesitant it was Troy Francis who squeezed out his challengers to be first home from Sam Peck and Damon Watson. Next week is a handicap road race at the Wingara winery as part of the Coomealla Triathlon Club event. Start time is at later than usual tie of 10am.
