The handicap classic was run over 80 kilometres between Launceston and the historic midlands town of Ross. 60 riders started the event, with overcast skies and a strong headwind holding up riders on their journey down the Midlands Highway. The race was split into two bunches, 5 minutes apart. The strong scratch group caught the frontmarkers at Conara, with Legana window cleaner Timmy Walker launching the first attack. After Walker was reeled in, A small group got away through Cambelltown, with Kharne Hammersley, Matt Sydes, Daniel Cutting and two riders just out of junior ranks Aaron Jones and Alex Lyons leading the pack. The hard working bunch brought the breakaways back, but Timmy Walker again jumped clear, and as the race left the Midlands Highway on the turnoff to Ross, he had a clear gap over the peleton. The bunch would not give in and with the defending champion Mark Jamieson leading the chase, Walker was brought back within sight of the finish line. Jamieson tried hard in the bunch sprint but Price had too much speed to take the win from the junior world champion, with Gareth Atkins finishing in third.
