No problem for Wright

Rose would have been delighted with the turnout on the day, when 60 hopefuls lined up for Sergeant Major Taylor's countdown. It turned out to be an exciting race, with the verdict still in doubt as the various groups entered the last 11km circuit. However, a strong head wind on the long and undulating Campersic Road worked in favour of the combined scratch and 30 second group, who working hard together, brought everyone to bay with about 5km to go.

There was no problem for the judges at the finish, with Gary Wright taking the sprint with a few lengths to spare from Atilla Nagy who was himself a clear length ahead of Dave Townson, with Dom Bruewhiler of the 4 minute bunch finishing close behind in fourth place to break a clean sweep by the shortmarkers.

Paul Barizza, Stephen Carton and Merv Byfield were also in at the kill, while Terry Burnett (Scr), Ed Campbell & Ken Harvey (10mins), Bill Mentor and George Fyvie (12m 30s) finished about 10secs behind, to sweep up the remainder of the 12 cash placings.

Gary Wright took out the fastest rider award and was delighted with the result when pointing out at the presentation that this had been his first handicap win in 30 years of racing. Scratch really excelled, the first lap of 16m 15secs being the fastest recorded in any of our races at Herne Hill.
