Particularly impressive was the high turnout of Women competitors, with ten racing the C grade event, and seven fighting for line honors in the D Grade bunch. However, the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the first podium appearance for Daniel Strangio, who has promised much over the past two seasons, and finally delivered! The A Grade race saw an early break escape for good, with Paul Richards (Team MG-ZT) joined by Justin Davis (O’Mara Cycles), Michael Tolhurst (Richmond Cyclery), Geordan Murray and Le Tour Cycles team-mates Richard England and Josh Vanderveen. Despite a strong presence from the BikeNOW boys, led by Barcelona Olympian Robert Crowe, Australian Junior Track team member Simon Clarke and powerful ex rower Travis Johnston, the breakaway had too much horsepower and was never in danger. The win went to Richards from Davis, with third to England the best the Le Tour combo could salvage. Strangio’s big moment came in the B Grade race, with a bunch sprint resulting after training partner Frank Cipriano had sacrificed his efforts to ensure a bunch finish. Designated sprinter Darren Cathie came through with the goods, taking the win and also leading Strangio into second place, ahead of Deaf Olympics hopeful Reece Van Beek and Boon Chia. C Grade also finished with a bunch sprint, despite a number of strong solo moves from Stuart Hastings. The strong Women’s contingent were always well positioned, with Jess Berry (Banana Flooring) looking comfortable in her first appearance at Glenvale, as was NSWIS rider Skye-Lee Armstrong. Canadian visitor Blair Purvis had the legs in the bunch kick, taking the win ahead of David Thornley, Gary Cairnduff and junior star Michael Downing (Le Tour Cycles). Berry took the honors in the Women’s division, with Armstrong overgearing for the dash to the line and being over-run by Louisa Judd and Ferne Walklate. A good mix of new comers, juniors and experienced Vets contested D Grade, with Michael Gallagher taking the win, from Tim White, Matt O’Connell and Adrienne Lang. Andrea Bishop was the first unplaced Woman, close on the heels of Lang. There is no club racing within the region next weekend, but the Queen’s Birthday weekend features three days of racing. First up is the $1000 Lenny Hammond Memorial over 100km at Modella on June 12, followed by Scratch races at East Wandin on the Sunday, and Criteriums on the testing Dalmore Drive circuit on Monday the 14th.
