Launceston's Karl Menzies is back in the winner's circle again after taking out first place as well as recording the fastest time in the Burnie to Launceston cycle race yesterday.

Menzies was denied a clean sweep of recent fastest time results last week when Belgium's Iljo Keisse took the honours at the Burnie 80 race where Menzies finished third.

Yesterday's 130km event saw nearly 40 riders depart Sulphur Creek in five handicapped bunches and on the first hill of the day, South Australian Matthew Opperman left his co-markers from the front group behind and was not caught until Hagley.

Menzies, Matt Goss and Wes Sulzberger rode well from the scratch mark and had caught three of the four groups in front of them by the Deloraine roundabout. The re-grouping of most of he race saw the riders amble along for nearly 10km before Mark Matthews made a move to bridge across to the front group.

This signaled the start of the attacks and several riders crossed the minute gap to the remaining five riders from the 30minute bunch as the race entered Carrick.

Menzies and Goss made the race-winning move through Carrick, taking Pete Smith and Matt Conn along for the ride. The small yet tough climb past Hadspen saw the end of Goss and Conn's winning aspirations and Menzies powered on to the finish at the Casino, leaving Smith behind in time to enjoy yet another solo victory.

A late move by Dave Oliver to secure third place was thwarted on the line by a fast finishing Goss, who also took second fastest time honours behind Menzies.

Menzies will start as outright favourite for next week's Tasmanian road championships in Devonport, which will be his final race before heading to Asia with the MGZT Bianchi team for a series of international tours.

Junior racing was held in Burnie with Will Robinson, Andrew Smith and Matt Ryan victorious in their age divisions while Robinson, Brenden Sutton and Brendon Stewart recorded the fastest times.
