A record number of 70 riders participated in the scratch races at West Dapto last Sunday. Sixteen came from the Sutherland Club. Near perfect conditions assisted to make the racing fast and furious. The fact that the races were held over the 9km short course also added to the speed and ferocity of some of the races.

A, B and C grades all raced five laps for their 45km distance while D grade raced 4 laps for their 36km.

While the A grade race was attack after attack it was the 28 riders in the B grade race that produced the quickest time on the day of 1:04:50, almost a minute faster than A grade.

There were many attempted breakaways in A grade but the one that was successful was by Adam Rourke and Dylan Forbes, who came in first and second. The pair crossed the line 6 seconds in front of the bunch that was led over the line by Peter Jones.

Sutherland's Ian Bradford was very aggressive in the B grade race, but it wasn't until he teamed up with Mark Davis that they were able to break the stranglehold of the bunch. The two worked very well together and crossed the line 1:48 in front of the bunch and third place getter Kevin Donovan (Sutherland).

C grade also had a large number of riders willing to try and get away even though there were 20 riders in the race. But in the end it all came down to a bunch sprint where Jason Johnson did what he does best and crossed the line in first place. The second place sprint was extremely close with Andrew Crawford(Sutherland) just holding off a very determined Ernie Hall.

Two Sutherland riders combined in the decisive breakaway in the D grade race and held off the bunch to win by 30 seconds. Dean Mason sprinted well and crossed the line just ahead of club mate Tim Rundle, both riders had given it their all. Vince O'Dwyer led the bunch sprint out and put 14 seconds into them in the final straight for a deserved third place.

Club president Pat Delahunty made the presentations for the race and concurred with Sutherland's John Peters that the combine was a good success.

Next Saturday there will be a short 36km scratch race with Sunday being the annual 90km Ken Dinnerville Handicap starting at Dapto High at 10am.
