Randwick Botany Cycling Club

Heffron Park, Maroubra, May 1, 2004

Action aplenty at Heffron Park

By Tony Horneman

There was plenty of action in the 36km A-grade event, with several attempted breaks, during the Randwick Botany Cycling Club racing at Heffron Park on Saturday 1 May 2004. Josh Marden attempted a break but Anthony "The King" Spurgeon knows how good young Josh is, and there was no way he was letting young Josh out of his sight. In the final sprint it was The King victorious once again. Chris "Spongee" Jenkins pushed The King right to the line whilst Josh was happy to cruise in for third place.

The B-Grade pace saw riders dropping off lap after lap until there were was only 6 left in the front bunch. Richie Collins from the Manly Warringah Club won the sprint fairly convincingly although Randwick Botany's Karl Bellamy pressed him right to the finish line for a well-earned second place. Arthur Driver is riding extremely well at the moment and came in third. Kevin Black was happy to cruise in for fourth place.

In C-grade two riders, one of whom was Alex Simmons from the Sydney Club, escaped from the peloton and spent most of the race working hard only to be caught just prior to the bell lap.
