Port Fairy Cycling Club

Kirkstall Pub 40km Handicap, May 1, 2004

Edwards weathers the storm

The Port Fairy Cycling Club hosted the third 'Autumn Classic' in as many weeks when brave cyclists lined up for the Kirkstall Pub Race on Saturday. Competitors were required to complete the Kirkstall - Hawkesdale - Kirkstall course (Approximately 40 kilometres). As has been the case for the last few weeks, a stiff southerly breeze made for high speeds on the outward leg and an absolute grind on the return leg.

The tough wind conditions were complimented with intermittent rain, hail and sleet, what a combination! These elements would once again favour the stronger riders, particularly considering the two or three tough climbs just out of Hawkesdale. However this factor didn't deter the early starters as they took off. The group containing Lester Campbell and Jill Edwards must have paid no attention to what was occurring behind them, instead their efforts were concentrated on catching Darryl Rae and Lynne Morris.

This task was achieved shortly after the turn around at Kirkstall. The head winds were too much for lone riders to contend with. Further back the inevitable joining of scratch and second scratch also occurred shortly after turning back toward the finish. This group now contained around 10 riders including Craig Taylor, Mark Winnen and Darby Lee.

It was definetly a day where strength lay in numbers. Any rider not able to attach to a bunch was at a major disadvantage. The race had developed into a 3 group affair. The back markers, a middle group containing Kate Winnen & David Rae and the front group of Edwards and Co. The three groups remained separate, the back-markers unable to catch either of the groups.

This left the trio of Wal Paton, Lester Campbell and Jill Edwards to fight out the places on the podium in a three up sprint. Edwards was able to continue her winning form by racing to the line first, closely followed by Campbell and Paton third.

Kate Winnen was able to get the jump on her group to collect fourth ahead of Darryl Edwards and David Rae.

Further back the large scratch bunch thinned out as the pace increased towards the finish. With only fastest time to race for, only the original scratch-markers; Mark Winnen, Jade Frankel, David Tozer and Brian McNamara had any thing to race for. Jade Frankel was way to quick for the other back-markers winning the sprint with ease.

After the last riders had crossed the line, there was a scurry to get into the warm and friendly surrounds of the Kirkstall Pub. The support of local businesses is certainly appreciated by the Port Fairy Cycling Club.

Saturday racing returns to the Port Fairy Showgrounds this weekend, 2.00pm. Riders are reminded that the 15th May is the Graham Woodrup Memorial Race, starting at 1.30pm, again at the Port Fairy Showgrounds. This event is part of the popular South West Series and therefore requires entrants to hold a Cycle Sport Victoria Licence. Port Fairy Club Riders are asked to bring along afternoon tea for the Woodrup race. Anyone requiring further details can contact Kate Winnen on 5568 2826 or 0419 587 238.
