72km graded handicap, (old) Red Cliffs cemetery circuit, May 1, 2004

Nathan Floramo again!

By Peter Winton

Nathan Floramo put together another strong effort from a C grade handicap (10:15) to prove his first up win was certainly no fluke.

On a less than inviting day with the weather forecast of showers and moderate to fresh sou'westerly winds another solid turn out of 38 riders pleased Club officials and riders alike (they are the same persons that's why!).

In an unusual result, given the windy conditions and only 10 minutes 15 seconds from the back markers, the C grade bunch work rate was above expectations with a 38km/hr average after 5 laps of the 8km circuit and an overall of 37.7kms/hr. This level of effort kept them away from the potentially tougher B grade bunch today. Notably there are at least 3 riders in this grouping who will, no doubt, find themselves elevated in the order shortly.

A couple of reports of top line efforts were made of Errol Schmidt in A grade, worked his butt off today. Adrian Lloyd and Peter Doody also looked very comfortable with the work rate in C grade. My spy in the D grade bunch alerted me to another smooth roll-over and continuous work rate effort from that bunch. Four of them finishing in the top 10 today.

For Scott Giles today, having his first crack at scratch, it was unfortunately his turn to puncture (early) and also to attract a bee to the inside of his helmet. Scotty then jumped on the back of C grade and enjoyed a tow. Nice little breakaway Gilesy in the last 2 kms though!

Steve Fenwick showed his latent talent again, although obviously underdone Steve worked away in his effortless style.

Unfortunately in this bunch Brendan Liddle brought himself down in the closing laps by catching the rutted edge of the bitumen in an echolon cutting into a cross wind. An ambulance was called with Brendan in some serious difficulty. All riders hope he can recover from whatever the resultant injuries are and make a return, in due course, to the racing scene.

Next week is one of the more serious Club races of M-CCC being the Leigh and Vicki Westcott perpetual "Autumn Classic", a 96km handicap. 3 laps of "coomie long" is the set task, commencing from the side road entrance to Simeon Wines along the highway towards Dareton (NSW) from Buronga. All riders are asked to be on-site well before the usual sign-on time of 10 minutes prior to enable the race to start on time this week. A 1:30pm start still applies.
