Windy winner wields winning ways

Peter Jones again outgunned the field in difficult conditions to take the Illawarra Cycle Club A-grade scratch race last Saturday. Graham Rutter, Dylan Forbes and Daniel Silveri crossed the line ten seconds behind Jones.

With a field of 39 riders making up the four grades, the gusting south-westerly winds once again tested the depth of the riders' fitness, causing the bunches to split more than once as the pressure was applied at the front.

A and B grade climbed the steep side of Marshall Mount twice in the 44 kilometre two lap event. C & D grades raced the first lap-and-a-half together but C-grade went over the steep side just once on lap two, allowing the D-graders to set their own pace after turning at Marshall Mount Hall, giving them the opportunity to enjoy racing together until the last few hundred metres. The D-grade race was eventually won by David Hull who finished strongly ahead Jenny Davis and Colin Shaw.

The B-grade event came down to a tight bunch sprint with Gil Rutty just edging out Ross Irvin from Andrew Stewart. Peter Evans finished ahead of Joel Penson to round out the top five.

The C-grade race appeared to suffer most from the conditions with riders finishing up to three minutes behind the front bunch. Paul Kaye won loudly from Peter Vesel and Tony Pulo. Kerry Auguston continued to improve finishing ahead of an injury-recovering Andy Shannon.

There will be no local racing next week due to the Goulburn round of the Interclub series to be held at Breadalbane. Start is at 2:00pm but aim to arrive at no later than 1:30 for sign-on.
