Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Devonport to LauncestonTasmania, March 27, 2004Another dominant ride by MenziesBy Matthew Conn Launceston’s Karl Menzies continued his dominance of the Tasmanian road cycling season with a strong solo win in the Devonport to Launceston race. The race was run in ideal conditions over the 100km course from Devonport to the Launceston subiurb of Prospect, with nearly 40 riders in five grades taking part. Racing from the scratch mark and giving away 18minutes to the front of the race, Menzies was the main pace setter in the group that rode through almost the entire field by the time the race turned onto the Old Bass Highway at Deloraine. An attack from the front, as the group passed through Hagley saw Menzies move clear with six other riders, including fellow scratchmen Steve Rossendell, Jai Crawford and Mark Bowden. The group of seven was never more than a few seconds clear of the chasing bunch and on the testing finishing run through Traveler’s Rest, Menzies broke clear, managing to establish a 20 second lead by the finish line. The sprint for second was taken out by Rossendell with veteran Mark Bowden third and Crawford fourth. Menzies, who is riding for Victorian based semi-professional team MG-ZT, also won the P.E. Green race at Cressy earlier this month with a solo breakaway and the Dorset Classic in February in a two-up sprint. Junior racing held earlier in the day at Moriarty saw Ben Fielding and Ben Grenda take first and fastest in their respective events, while the under 13 race was won by Callan Walker, with Brendan Hayward riding the fastest time.
