Tenthill Classic
Gatton, Queensland, March 14, 2004
The 3rd annual Tenthill classic was run on the outskirts of Gatton Tuesday, over 5 laps of a twisty, undulating 25 km circuit. This race marks the official beginning of the Cycling Qld Road Racing series and a strong field of 60 elite A grade riders turned out to test their legs after a long summer of training and criterium racing.
After an early start under crisp blue skies, the race began to hot up after 35kms, with the peloton strung out in front of a large collection of diehard supporters on the second ascent of the “Carnival on the Climb”. At exactly 50 kms into the race, a major attack was launched by Adrian Booth (Healthworks- Victors), taking Stuart Cowin (Astra Merida), former Belgian based rider Jared Poad (Velo) and Kurt Dutton (Healthworks-Victors). This quartet rotated turns at speeds averaging 46 kph until a group of 7 bridged across at 80kms. Crucially, this new group contained U.S. based Pro Cameron Hughes (Subway Express), Matt Newlands and Jono Coulter (Healthworks-Victors), Sean Leggate (Zipp), Gilbert Gutowski (Broncos) and Flight Centre duo Cam Rogers and Anthony Quelen.
As the gap ballooned to over 2 minutes, the Lifecycle and Ffast teams mounted a futile chase, while Kane Oakley (Lite Bar) and Ben Vanderkamp (Zipp) attempted to bridge the gap. With 40 kms remaining Cam Hughes, Rogers and Newlands drifted off the front in the headwind on the back straight, and with 3 Healthworks riders policing the rest of the break, the attackers quickly pulled out to a 45 second gap. With a hefty crowd lining the finishing straight at Ropehill sportsground, it was Cameron Rogers who led out at 200 metres to go. Not reknown for his sprinting, he still managed to hold off Newlands and Hughes, and pumped his fists in the air as he hit the line a length in front of a frustrated Hughes.
