Norwood Cycling Club Weekend series #18

Fantastic weather greeted the cyclist who turned out to the mornings racing with a large crowd attending to watch. Mat Rex finally made his move to the top of the points series table by overhauling Chris Luxton by one point. A large contingent of cyclist who raced were in Adelaide this week qualifying for positions on the Paralympics team for Athens. These exceptional cyclists showed their able bodied competitors just how good they are.
In E grade it was all Julian Trudringer, he kept the pace high and had the bunch strung out most of the race. New rider Andrew Roe and big fella Jacob Jacobs could only follow in his slipstream all the way to the line, with Jacobs happy to finally finish in the placings.
Will Elrich and Tom Skulander surprised a few of the local riders with the intensity they had on the pace of the bunch and certainly had the locals working hard to keep pace. Matthew Rawnsley and Filippo Immesi tried to make a break just before they received two laps to go but the bunch were alert and did not let them get too far ahead. It all came down to a bunch sprint with Thom Edwards easily taking the win from Greg Ford and Gino Delfino.
C grade only had a small bunch today but, they kept the pace solid and stayed together. Giac Cirillo won the race from Bryce Alexander and Daniel Smith. Cirillo has certainly found some form this season placing in quite a number of races and is a rider to keep an eye on.
Numbers increased in B grade today with the majority of the athletes with disabilities entering here. The riders came from Western Australian, Victorian and Adelaide clubs. Again the bunch was held together by some very hard and fast racing with only two riders dropping from the bunch. A very big, fit and strong Darren Hansberry had some blistering pace in the sprint to take the win in front of ex New Zealand elite rider Michael Lampp and Riverland cyclist Casey Danvers.
A big field of A grade cyclists once again fronted the starter, as they are warming up for the Criterium Championship and Lord Mayors Cup at Whitmore Square on the 28 of March. Also a lot of competition is going on between these riders as 9 A grade riders are in the top 15 money scoring positions. The average race speed once again was over 50km/h and the race came down to a drag to the line. Once again no-one could match Olympian Brett Aitkens speed as he pulled ahead of the pack. Mat Rex finished in his wake in second position while young Russell Gill flicked over Chris Luxton for third. With Rex finishing second and having one rider between him and Luxton he now tops the Sponsored Series by one point over Luxton, this will make a very interesting final two rounds.
