Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Norwood Cycling Club Tuesday seriesRegency Park, South Australia, March 9, 2004With now only two Tuesday criteriums to go the consistency award is extremely close with only 3 points separating the top two and anyone in the top ten still able to win. It was a cool overcast night this evening but that didn’t stop the riders coming out in force with the biggest number of riders we have had in A grade so far this season with 35 starters. Michael Karp went for the early break in E grade but the bunch kept together in their group riding their time and he eventually came back. They hoped to put it all on the line in the sprint. Michael Karp went for it with a lap to go but this was a little too early and Shane Kelly had a good Tussle with Duncan Fairclough to take out the sprint win. Michael Worden, Dickson Beattie, Andrew Fon, Paul Doecke and Greg Stanyer all put on a cracking pace in D grade with an early breakaway. The bunch just kept a good tempo riding behind. The pace was too much for new rider Beattie and he returned to the bunch, soon after that Fon also found it would be better cruising in the main pack. Doecke, Worden and Stanyer stayed out in front for some time and looked to have the race sown up but the bunch thought otherwise and bought them back in the last five minutes. When the pace slowed Greg Ford took an advantage and went on a solo attack. The bunch bought him back in the last lap and it was going to be all up in the bunch sprint. Doecke and Stanyer must have had their weaties for breakfast as they were able to sprint after all the hard work they had done in the break and took first and second in D grade over some very experienced masters in the Zucker brothers Graeme and Steve. In C grade the early attack came from Mark Smith, Gavin Nugent, Tony Mingnorance, Ben Starrs and Giac Cirillo. The large bunch was not concerned and allowed a small gap to open between them. The race stayed like this with both groups riding tempo until the A grade field went past and some bright spark thinking they would go with them and the rest followed. The race all came together, I mean every bunch that was racing, over 100 riders and the testosterone started flying with brainpower out the window and they all thought they were elite riders switching through the packs. Finally after some time and officials doing their best to gain the riders attention to wake them up they sorted themselves out into their own groups. Mingnorance then went on the solo attack and received two laps to go, he was in the process of passing B grade that also had two to go. Oops switch brain off catch B grade and sit on them, that’s what C did. In B grade it was Bernd Froessler and Michael Lampp who have just moved up a grade on the attack, both worked well together and were very strong. They were being chased by Scott Maney and Paul Wainwright also both just put up a grade, the bunch were content to just follow. Again their whole race came together when A grade passed. They received their one to go as C grade were mixed in with them which caused some confusion for the riders, but both bunches had ridden their time and the officials were not going to keep them out there for another half an hour whilst they sorted themselves out like has been done before. The mixed bunch sprint was interesting with Froessler and Wainwright just ahead to take first and second in B and Nugent, Adam Garrod and John Kah finishing together with only inches between them in a photo finish for C. A grade was a great race with a large field this evening with the addition of British cycling legend Hilton Mc Murdo. It was certainly obvious to onlookers that the bunch was unaware to the abilities of a rider such as Mc Murdo. The first break that went contained Mc Murdo, MTB star Chris Jongewaard and Ryan Milton, they opened a small gap but Mc Murdo was only testing the waters to see who would chase then went back to the bunch. Then after 12 minutes of racing German rider Arne Hinrichsen of Stevens-Vonhacht went for a solo effort but was reeled in a few minutes later. Then again 20 minutes into the race Mc Murdo, Jongewaard and this time TDU SASI rider Mat Rex went for the break. Milton would be kicking himself as this time the race was all over for the bunch as they would not be able to get close to this powerhouse trio. Two laps to go and Milton and Alan Gill attacked to try and gain fourth and fifth but the bunch was not letting them go anywhere especially with Brett Aitken on the front. Powerful sprinter Rex beat Mc Murdo in the sprint then the hard working Jongewaard third. The big bunch sprint was then won by Chris Luxton of ORBEA bikes over James Russell.
