Time trial king Dangerfield in solo winAfter last weeks washout, Round 9 of the Trek Bikes Summer Series was raced in clear, almost perfect autumn conditions as British time trial specialist Sturat Dangerfield soloed away on the last lap to sneak a win in front of a fast finishing chase group. David Tanner lead home the sprint which is also included Series leader Jose Rodriguez who grabbed a valuable two points to extend his lead over B grade international Dave Whyman who was unable to race last night. With three more races still to go in the Series, the first prize of a Trek 5500 Carbon OCLV frame is still anybody's, however the race for the Sprint King first prize of the Shimano Dura Ace Wheelset swung in Mathew Lucas's favour last night as he increased his lead over clubmate Jerzy Sowa to twelve points. Despite their relatively small number of only 12 riders, A grade were able to put in a very smooth and fast ride in the favourable conditions and had B and C grade lined up with four laps to go. Unfortunately the long awaited return to racing by Frank Conceicao (not sure what he was returning from) didn't spur the 27 strong C grade bunch to greater things as B grade, riding their smoothest race in weeks rounded up C grade two laps before A grade closed the gap. In the final laps, apart from some strenuous efforts in the gutter down the straight, the combined bunches largely stayed together, although it was the A grade big motors of Tanner, McGee (NSWIS) and Rodriguez, Campbell, Stewart, Dangerfield (Easts) who were doing the damage. After some earlier softening up moves off the front, Dangerfield's attack on the last lap was the one that finally paid off. A big effort into the wind around the back and just grind it out to the finish - sounds easy, but it required every bit of his considerable international TT experience to pull it off. Creeping back into form and onto the leader board for the first time in the Series was local King, Anthony Spurgeon who has now set his sights on a race win before the Series finishes. Backing up his earlier sprint king wins, Matt Lucas claimed 1st B grade with another fine finish. In the battle for C grade supremacy, Southern Cross junior Keeagn Atchinson got the win and the new C grade series lead, while Duncan Markham hung on for third and still holds second place in the pointscore.
