(Mildura), June 5, 2004Floramo For 3 winsBy Peter Winton 30 riders today, it's becoming too regular, pretty soon we'll wake up and it will all seem like a dream, won't it? Any other club out there achieving a 50% (of membership) participation rate? It was that man again today, Nathan Floramo, the guy who seems to completely confound the handicapper. And you reckon he hasn't got a smirk on his face? Well, it's as big as Peter Doody's smirk (yes, he tells me it's an Irish thing). Floramo won his race today from the 6:30 bunch in a close up finish with Dion Bassi-Anstee, the 2 stand-out riders from that bunch, with Harry Robbins third. Scratch only missed the podium by a matter of a few metres. Scratch today held Kev Tankard, Rob McNally, Errol Schmidt, Pete Mulhearn, Mark Busch (fastest time today) and the unlucky Scott Giles. Unlucky coz he seems to have stepped on a chinamans grave sometime, he's had some rotten luck in recent times and today he raced with the dregs of the flu and couldn't go the pace. In chopping block, at 3 mins, Ian Beruldsen, Arthur Anderson, Richard Hale, Peter Doody and Rob Akkermans. Floramo's bunch, at 6:30, contained Jack Lokan, Peter Mills (fresh from an Italian tour), Stephanie Frawley, Adam Wightwick (I might train one day), Dion Bassi-Anstee , Michael Shipsides and Peter Winton . This group certainly looked the goods from the announcement of the handicaps. The biggest group of the day, and some significant firepower in Mills, Floramo and Bassi-Anstee. Jack Lokan had a glow-up as he could see the potential. Unfortunately he was to lose his chain before midway and be left to the whim of the chasing bunches. Winton wasn't to keep up the intensity and no wonder when he looked at his bike computer, 39kms/hr+ average. At 11 minutes were Kev Gregory, Harry Robbins, Jeff Mitchell, Robyn Doyle, Brendan Liddle making a tentative return after suffering a serious leg injury some weeks ago and Sam Priest (junior) doing 8 laps of the 11. Brendan Liddle managed a solid 7 laps and his fellow Club members wish him well in recovery. At limit today on 17 minutes were Dave Digby (no post race falls today), Andrew Twaddle, Cam Crothers, Kris Cerini and newcomer Tom Athorn. Next week is a 60km road race at the Gol Gol (NSW) circuit.
