Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Illawarra Cycle Club ScratchNSW, February 29, 2004Morris too strongA strong gusty south west wind greeted the 41 riders in the 37.5km scratch races last Sunday morning. With such trying conditions the strong men really shone through, Tim Morris and Graham Rutter in A grade with Darren Toms and Hans Batteard in B grade. 10 riders lined up for the start of the A-Grade scratch race. A strong pace was set from the start aided by the tail wind. When the bunch turned onto Marshal Mount Road the riders were faced with a strong head wind making the going tough. Graham Rutter made some early attempts to break away, but each time was brought back. Then Tim Morris tried his luck. The bunch seemed content to let him go and he quickly established a 30 second lead. But things would soon change. Going up Marshall Mount Hill after 9kms raced the bunch was finally stirred into action. After a frantic pace up the hill, the bunch was still behind the lone leader Morris, but cracks were starting to appear. Graham Rutter moved the front and applied the pressure. With the help of a tailwind he soon had the bunch strung out at 60km/h. Only Keith Bennett, Dylan Forbes and Gavin Drury could hold his wheel. The 4 soon joined Morris at the front and things remained fairly civil for the remainder of the race. After being delayed waiting for a passing vehicle, the bunch was even kind enough to wait for Morris to catch back up. With the finish line closing in Graham Rutter again made numerous attacks and was successful in splitting the group once again this time reaching the last kilometre with only Keith Bennett on his wheel. But Morris wasn't going to let such a dangerous move go, and made contact with 400 meters to go. In the sprint to the line Morris took the win from Rutter. B grade had a good sized field of 13 riders. Right from the start Batteard rode off the front, after 1.5km Tony Pulo joined him. The two swapped off turns until they were caught 3km later. Kirk Brown had a very animated ride, attacking and surging at every opportunity. After the turn at Marshal Mount James Thornton put his head down and stayed away until the climb up Hooker Hill. Michael Comensoli covered every move and pushed the pace on many occasions. Craig Paull rode strongly in only his second scratch race. After a very demanding race 10 of the riders were up for the finish. Comensoli attacked with 1.5km to go and looked like he had secured a well deserved win but he was mowed down and passed in the last few meters by Toms. Steve Newman sprinted well for third. Unfortunately there was a touch of wheels in the combined C/D grade race. Only 3 riders fell but quite a few riders stopped to lend assistance reducing the 14 rider field to 4. Dave Morris repeatedly attacked the group but to no avail. Craig Dinning and Tony Burke marked him closely. Burke won a close sprint from Dinning with Morris third. Club sponsor Frank Soto is on the come back trail and rode in for a gutsy fourth. Next week’s race is a 37.5km handicap, Lionel would like to hear from anyone who intends to be racing so they can be placed in their handicap bunch. Group 5 will be marshalling.
