MTBer Jongewaard strong on tarmac too

Small fields today for most groups with the exception for the sun hardened riders in A grade out enjoying the heat.

Gino Delfino kept his small group of merry riders of E grade in control by doing most of the work on the front. The heat took its toll on a few of these riders as they took to sitting in the shade for the rest of the race. Delfino was way to good and easily took the win.

D grade had much the same type of race with riders Greg Ford and Daniel Smith putting in surges to break this small bunch up. Their efforts were in vain as one tried riding a corner at high speed with a puncture and both came down hard. It was then left to Corey Roberts to take out the sprint.

C grade saw the sprinters come out to play in the heat today, with only a small bunch of riders. This group patiently rode around saving their energy for the duration for the sprint but Paul Volkmann had something else up his sleeve by trying a breakaway. The bunch did not bother lifting there pace to chase and thought he would come back, wrong, never seen again. Volkmann took the win by the length of the finishing straight and the bunch sprint was won by Jason Hagon from Jarrod Cross.

B grade's small bunch of sun hardened athletes saw masters rider Rick Steahr make the first attack. His solo effort stayed away for a while but with the likes of Dave Gomer in the bunch was not going to get away. Eventually Scott Green from Gomers team and Damien Hall made a two man attempt, it was all over. Bot riders worked hard and well and opened a large break with the help of Gomer sitting at the front of the bunch. Young Hall won the sprint over a tired Green and the bunch sprint was won by Daryl Margrate who is always improving.

A grade had a good size bunch as these riders are used to a little hot weather because if there is no racing they will go and do 150km ride instead. Olympic champion Brett Aitken together with Nick Wood went on the first attack, later top Australian mountain bike rider Chris Jongewaard went with James Sampson, these breaks were just to stretch the legs and came back to the bunch. Next a more organised bunch took the reins with Tony McLoughlin, Joe Underwood, Russell Gill and Wood opening a better gap and holding off the bunch as a few riders started falling apart due to the heat. Most of the riders that had recently raced in Canberra heat couldn’t follow up again today and withdrew part way through the race. This sent Jongewaard and Ben Biggs into overload and they took off with a strong effort and opened a big break to an unresponsive bunch. In the end Jongewaard had too much strength over Biggs and took the win.
