Another hot one

By Peter Winton (with respect to Peter Doody)

Gooooood Mooorrrning Milduraaaa !! It's hot, damned hot, gonna be a scorcher today with the mercury tipped to topple the 43 degree mark. I'm not feeling too good after having done 4 hours yesterday on my black steed so I think I'm gonna say I had a dose of the "cbf's" (couldn't be f-------).

You just can't keep avid cyclists away from Mildura races. In heavy rain, thunder and lightning to dripping sweat stained dry heat where eggs could fry on a steel plate with no fire underneath, Mildura riders just wanna race !

Our sympathies go out to the Port Fairy riders struggling in 28 degree heat, you poor buggers.

Twenty-one cycling junkies appeared thru the heat haze (31 degrees at 9:00 am) to sign on. A couple of visitors, Pep Piscioneri from Port Adelaide, fronted again along with A. Boase from no known address. Well, I can't write about it if no-one finds out where these interlopers spring from.

Greg Scott, Jeff Mitchell and Bob Pedler off at 12 minutes and chasing down lone limit man, Kristen Cerini who went out at 15. Peter Doody, Sean Gallagher and Pep Piscioneri on the road at 8 minutes. Michael Shipsides, Adrian Lloyd, Arthur Anderson and Richard Hale in the mid ground at 6 minutes. The biggest bunch at 4 minutes comprising, Steve Fenwick, A Boase, Dion Bassi-Anstee, Brendan Liddle, Ian Beruldsen and Barry Pollock. Then the "A-Team" all off scratch , Mark Busch, Kevin Tankard, Rob McNally, and Nathan Summerhayes.

All groups, apart from the two limit groups were con-joined before the start of the last lap. Worthy of note was Piscioneri who had ridden around in the same gear for seven laps of the scheduled nine. Hmmm, reminds me of another visitor last year who did that. Foxing?

Then it must have been a dehydration thing as confusion reigned over the lap count! I don't know, we don't race "laps" we race distances, but nevertheless, if the brain is muddled there's "Liddle" you can do.

The 19th street tail-wind section brought some attacks to the race. This section has a few sand-hill rises in it which can sap the leg strength of riders where all they get is flat roads every day all day.

Remembering this is now a sprint for third place as the second-limit guys have snapped up first and second.

And the Teschner frame of the one and only Peter Doody has rounded up the two red Cannondales (Tankard and McNally) which according to the owner will be a bit like Halley's Comet, you know, once every 75 years or thereabouts! Temperature at the end - 35 degrees Celsius.

Great rides by Greg Scott to take out the race (and his first Club win?) followed by Jeff Mitchell in second.

Tuesday's time-trial will possibly not be held as the forecast is for 41.
