Usual suspects perform well

After three weeks of horrible weather Port Fairy Cycling Club was finally able to conduct a Wednesday night Criterium in fine and warm conditions. Riders turned up in good numbers allowing for three graded races.

The C Grade event turned out to be a battle of two as Toby Hunt, a young rider from Hamilton, and Kate Winnen proved too strong for the rest of the field. Kate was riding high on confidence after picking up a win on Saturday in the club Road Race and made it two from two with an impressive turn of speed coming out of the final corner to overpower Toby Hunt.

The B Graders put on an exciting race, in a very even contest where a number of riders tried their luck, attacking it seemed inevitable that it would be a day for the sprinters. Probably the performance of the night came from Ronnie Hollingsworth. After complaining of being 'near death' prior to the race, Ronnie miraculously managed to be the main aggressor in the race. Imagine how strong he would have been if he wasn't compromised with Asian Bird Flu, or whatever he was claiming to have contracted.

In the final sprint it was two names that Port Fairy Cycling Club is going to have to pre-print into results sheets, due to their consistent results. Neil Duncan made a desperate lunge on the line, only to fall short by the smallest margin to winner John Blair. These guys must think cycling is the easiest sport, they just keep on winning.

A good field of A Graders began their 30-minute race at a fast but constant speed. Attacks didn't start until about the mid point of the race. The pack was able to control all of the solo attempts, particular attention was paid to any made by Andy Graham.

Late in the race the pressure of chasing down riders told on the pack and two riders were allowed to escape with two laps to go. As is normally the case, Graham was one of the escapees.

The two riders were able to maintain their gap and contest a two up sprint. Even after having completed a substantial training ride earlier in the day, Graham was able to hold out for a win, being too fast in the finish for David Tozer. Jade Frankel was fastest in the chasing pack, giving him third place.

The final Wednesday night Criterium will be held next Wednesday 11th February 2004. Racing begins at 6.30pm at St. Pats School, Port Fairy, $5 entry. And of course Saturday Road Racing continues from the Port Fairy Showgrounds at 2pm.
