Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Illawarra CCAugust 28, 2004Johnson too powerfulJason Johnson provided a 'Ryan Bayley' sprint to take out the 45km handicap last weekend, his winning time was 1:14:24. Johnson powered away from the fourteen rider strong bunch over the last 100m to win from Scott Turnbull and David McMaster. Forty seven riders provided the handicappers with a difficult task to separate them into ten bunches for the event. While the skies were clear the SE winds built up during the race making the going pretty tough heading out for the last lap. Over the first few laps of five, the time gaps between the groups was slowly decreasing but the big mover was the 9 minute group of Johnson, McMaster, Tony Burke, Kerry Augustson. As the riders headed out for the third lap the 9 and 10 minute groups were combined and they were only a minute behind the 12 minute group. The 18 and 20 minute groups were holding off the flying 22 minute bunch, by 1:05, who still had 1:30 on the hard working scratch riders of Guy Mathiske and Tim Morris. Just before the end of the fourth lap the 9 and 10 minute bunch caught the 12 minute group and were the leaders on the road. Over the last lap Augustson, Burke, McMaster and Paul Kaye were driving along the bunch. The gaps had decreased rapidly between the bunches over the fourth lap with 3:30 covering first to last as they entered the final lap. With 1.5km to the finish Col Shaw attacked, but the bunch chased him down. When he was caught at the 1km mark Kaye counterattacked, Johnson chased hard and brought the bunch all back together. As they entered the finishing straight Burke started the sprint out but was quickly passed by the flying Johnson. As Johnson pulled away there was a drag race between Turnbull, McMaster, Vesel and Burke. There was less than a bike length separating the top seven riders as they crossed the finish line. As the winning bunch crossed the line the 20 minute group entered the finishing straight. Dave Russel, Daniel Daly and Keith Bennett had ridden a mighty race to stay away from the much larger 22 minute bunch. They finished 16 seconds behind the winner. Frank Soto led the block bunch over the line a further 34 seconds later with Mathiske a further 32 seconds back. Mathiske recorded the fastest time of 1:06:36. Next week the riders will be having a leisurely ride up Mt Keira from Byarong Park at 1pm. A family BBQ will be held after the ride.
