Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Illawarra CCAugust 14, 2004Wall convincing winnerJosh Wall proved himself to be far and away the strongest rider in Saturday's 45km scratch race. A relatively small field of eight riders lined up in A grade to do battle in the exceptionally strong south-west winds. Aided by a tailwind on the first half of each of 5 the laps, speeds in excess of 65kmph on the flat were common. It was the headwind section that decided the race. On the first homeward leg Mitchell Pearson opened up an advantage over the other seven riders. In what appeared a premeditated move, Wall bridged across the gap and the pair proceeded to drive home the advantage. Despite the chasing group being well marshalled and all the riders working hard, Wall and Pearson simply rode away. Wall decided to test his legs on his own in the third lap and eventually time trialed to the finish with almost two minutes advantage over Pearson. Frank Tortorici and Michael Commensoli continued their friendly rivalry with Tortorici pipping Commonsoli by little more than a tyre width to claim third place. Daniel Daly won the B grade race, continuing a good run of form following his second place in last weeks tough Nowra Interclub race. Dave Russell was active at the head of the race trying to break up the bunch however strong riding from Daly, Dean Marcinkowski, and Andrew Stewart prevented Russell gaining any lasting advantage. In the bunch sprint finish Daly accelerated away from Jason Johnson with Stewart claiming third and Steve Newman fourth respectively. Phil Latz claimed a fine win in C grade, victorious in a three-up sprint with Phil Jones taking second place and Kerry Augustson third. The thirteen strong field splintered early in the second lap on the tailwind section. A group of six formed and the chasing riders did not have the strength to rejoin as they turned back into the wind. Only the three place-getters remained at the front with one lap to go, with Latz eventually powering home in the sprint. Megan Wilkie won the D grade race with 5 seconds to spare from Vince O'Dywer.
