Blue skies dawned for the July edition of Carnegie Caulfield's Winter Criteriums; although fairly cool, the weather was kinder than it had been for much of the summer season! The good weather brought strong fields, with racing fierce in all grades. 2003 Australian Club Champion Chris Bradford, who recently returned from riding the Tour of Qinghai Lake with the Australian National Team, brought four Indonesian riders from his Wismila International Team to the fast Glenvale circuit. Wismila are in Australia to race the Tattersall's Cup series; the qualification series for the Herald Sun Tour. Bradford was on the attack early, along with Barcelona Olympian Robert Crowe (RideWiser), Kel McCulloch (SBR), Tom Nankervis (Fitzroy Cycles) and Justin Davis (O'Mara Cycles). The early break weren't given too much head start by the attentive bunch, and the field regrouped. After a string of unsuccessful attempts to break up the pack, Davis was the first to establish a meaningful gap with around fifteen minutes remaining. Five minutes later, Bradford powered across, along with big Stewart Hill (RideWiser). The trio rode away from the bunch, with Bradford attacking on the final lap to claim the win. Davis outsprinted Hill for second, with the bunch led home by Wismila rider Adi Wibowo. Eddie Perez followed every attack in B Grade, and was rewarded for his tenacity by being part of the winning move with fifteen minutes to race. He joined Jamie Nicholson, and the pair established an advantage of ten seconds. Super Vet Geoff Whiter (Johns Cycles) chased across at the fifty-five minute mark, when the field would ordinarily expect to see the '3 to go' lap board. As the break were closing in on the tail end of A Grade, however, officials decided to delay the finish until the A Grade race was over - much to Perez's disappointment! Track sprinter Andrew Shannon, blasted across to the lead group in the final three laps, and after a short recovery, jumped away at the second last corner to take a convincing win. Whiter sprinted home second, ahead of Nicholson and a tired Perez. A frustrated Scott Arnold led the bunch home, out of the prize money. Peter Ballas took a flier on bell lap to try to steal the C Grade race, and his move almost paid off as he lead into the home straight by fifty metres. Simon Prentice (Le Tour Cycles) burst from the pack to run the leader down, but Ballas hung on for second. Danny Weatherley got the judges nod for third, inches ahead of Craig Rothenbuecher. Latrobe Valley youngster Peta Mullens took the win in D Grade and family honours, sprinting past Dan West in the final metres after West had lead out a long way from home. Third went to her brother Matt, with the irrepressible Jack Dovaston in full Domina Vacanze zebra stripes claiming the final prize money. PhotographyImages by Mal Sawford
