Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews West Tamar OpenTasmania, April 17, 2004Debut victory for FurmstonBy Matthew Conn Hobart cyclist Daniel Furmston took his first road victory on Saturday with a strong solo breakaway in the final stages of the West Tamar Open. The 20 year old university student has only been racing for 18 months and his first win followed on from a run of consistent results including fifth in the Devonport to Launceston race and second in his grade at the Launceston three day tour. Furmston’s 8 minute group had caught all of the bunches in front of them by the final of the four, tough 20km laps. Together with the experienced Michael Wilson and Pete Smith, Furmston broke away on the twisting descent into Sidmouth. As the chasing bunch caught the breakaway at 5km to go, the Hobart rider made his wining move, eventually finishing 45seconds ahead of Ulverstone’s Ben Price. Scratchman Karl Menzies earned his prizemoney, taking nearly 40km to close the 30 second gap to the group in front. Menzies then had to chase the group down a second time after stopping to replace a punctured wheel. He recorded the fastest time ahead of Jai Crawford and Matt Goss. Aaron Jones, David Lyons and Gerald McDonagh were all race winners in the junior categories with Jones, Ben Grenda and Ryan Mather recording the fastest race times in the three different age categories.
