Fred Keefe Memorial

Launceston, Tasmania, April 3, 2004

Menzies clocks up another

By Matthew Conn

Karl Menzies had added yet another road race to his ever increasing list of victories after winning yesterday’s Fred Keefe memorial cycle race at St. Leonards.

Once again, Menzies crossed the line alone after a well-executed late break saw him move clear just before White Hills with under 15km of the 80kms of racing remaining.

The front group of six category 3 riders was given a ten-minute head start which allowed Jarrod Harmon and John Rayner to hit the turnaround alone with a small lead over the chasing group.

The main group of back markers split and rejoined several times over the early climbs and as the groups made the turnaround, former Tour of Italy stage winner Michael Wilson along with Dale Woolston and Mark Bowden were 1 minute behind the two leaders and 40seconds clear of the remaining Cat 1 and 2 riders.

After a regrouping at 30km to go, a number of riders launched attacks but when Menzies broke clear he quickly build a lead and the remaining riders soon resigned themselves to racing for second.

In the sprint for the minor placings, Matt Goss was too quick for Josh Wilson with Wes Sulzberger holding out former winner Tim Walker in the race for fourth.

In the junior events, held over the same testing course, Tom Robinson won a tough battle with Clay Murfet, Alex Lyons and Grace Sulzberger and in doing so also took fastest time honours. Ben Grenda was first and fastest in the under 15 race and Ryan Ockerby won the under 13 event while Brandon Stewart recorded the fastest time.
