Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Illawarra CCSeptember 20, 2003Jones too goodPeter Jones showed that mighty kick he has in the last 20m of a race that has held him in good stead in so many road and track races over the years by edging out Tim Morris in the A grade 41km scratch race last Saturday. A good size field of ten riders set off in the C grade 37.5km scratch race and they stayed together until the climbs up Marshal Mount and Hooker hill when six slipped away. Greg Fisher, Warren Poole, Mark O'Keefe and Peter Vesel shared the work well. Newcomer Daniel Silveri also rode well and is learning more with every race. As they approached the finish Dean Kelly and Paul DuBois also applied the pressure with Poole and Fisher loosing contact. In a close finish Vesel won from O'Keefe and Kelly. Jonathan Stagg, Dean Marcinkowski and Lionel Covington were all showing their wares during the B grade 41km scratch race. Firstly Stagg and Marcinkowski attacked and as soon as they were caught Covington went on the counter attack. Marcinkowski reacted and the two led the bunch over Marshall Mount by 75m. On the descent and flat before the turn Ben Lohse powered along and brought the bunch back to the leaders. On the climb Stagg, Covington, Lohse, Marcinkowski and Bobby Krstevski broke away. Stagg attacked the group mercilessly and Lohse tested them out on the climbs. As they approached the finish the group were back together again. Marcinkowski led out but was overtaken by Krstevski and Lohse with 200m to go. Stagg timed his finish to perfection and crossed the line first by a half wheel. Krstevski was second and Lohse third. Although there were twelve starters in A grade it apparent that Jones, Morris, Danny Hennessy and Adam Rourke were in a class of their own. Even before the climb up the steep side of Marshall Mount several riders had been put into difficulty by the top four. Hennessy's attacks proved decisive in splintering the group as did the climbing of Morris. The four never eased up even when they got away and constantly tested each other. Hennessy led the sprint out but once Morris wound it up he easily passed him. Jones came off the back of the trio and pipped Morris by a quarter of a wheel. Next week's race is a 18km two person time trial, riders are to try and organise their teams before the day. Group 1 is to marshal.
