10 Pots Priesty!

By Peter Winton

Cool, 14 degree temperatures with clear skies and light winds were the temptations offered to Mildura cyclists on Saturday and out they came, all 24 of them.

Well, it’s not the 100+ field you city guys might get but it’s 45% of our membership! Do you compare with that?

The Club welcomed Mark Phillips from Randwick-Botany (home for the weekend). Limit held a 15 minute gap on the scratch markers and Sam Priest, Robyn Doyle and Jeff Mitchell trundled off down 5th Street and on their way close to the standard start time of 1:30pm. Second limit, Dave Priest, Richard Hale, Kevin Gregory and Anthony Connell out 4 minutes later. In the middle at 9 mins were our visitor, Barry Pollock, Jack Lokan, Harry Robbins, Sean Gallagher and Peter Winton (minus one Zipp). This group thought it may have been a chance today, alas.

Chopping block today held the perennial Arthur Anderson, Peter Mills, junior Bassi-Anstee, Ian Brade and Brendan Liddle enjoying a 2:30 respite from the "itchy" ones (scratch that itch!). On the mark of honour were Mark Busch (finally), Michael Shipsides (caught up with at last), Rob McNally, Nathan Welsh, Peter Mulhearn and Chris Baudry in his final race with us.

The 6.08 kilometre circuit was to be travelled 8 times by the riders today. Not a bad little course as the prevailing winds generally combine with the rising sections along Meridian Road to drag on the quads. Today however, Dave Priest would stamp his authority on his bunch and the rest of the field. The only group not to capture any riders or be caught itself were the 9 minute team as the scratch - bloc combo were unable to reel in the even tempo’d middle men and they in turn not able to bridge the time gap although 2 more kilometres would have seen it all up.

Dave Priest bellowed "10 pots (of beer)" as his victory cry to the finishing riders as he basked in the success of his newly found Friday evening race preparation. Forget the carbo shots and power gels brandished by the "lolly shop" owners and gulped by the wannabe’s, the carlton elixir had too many herbs for it’s competitors today. All hail the amber fluid!

Race averages were not lousy, scratch recorded 41 km/h, 9 minute bunch had 39 which is the usual separation for us.

Next week is Red Cliffs cemetery, were all under done cyclists get buried!
