Sun Tour practice run for Port Fairy CC

Elite cyclists from all corners of Victoria converged on Port Fairy to contest the Victorian 100 kilometre Championships on Sunday. Over 80 cyclists competed in the Open event, which was held over 40 laps of the two and a half kilometre circuit around Campbell Street, James Street & Ocean Drive.

The mass of riders took of at 12.15pm from the Southcomb Park Sporting Complex and intentions of the top riders were made clear right from the outset. Robert Tighello (Carnegie-Caulfield) was the first of the favourites to attempt to breakaway. Tighello, who has previously performed well at the Tour Down Under, was unable to gain an advantage over a watchful lead group of riders, his ability to ride away from the pack is well documented and therefore all his moves were countered.

Just as Tighello had given up on trying to attack, another of the fancied riders, Tim Decker of Bendigo, put in a massive effort to ride off the front of the pack. This is extremely difficult when the average speed of the main group is around 40 kilometres an hour. However the speed that Decker has developed from Velodrome racing was enough to get a small gap. A number of riders followed Decker’s wheel and at approximately the 25 kilometre mark a group of around 20 riders had forced a breakaway.

In the breakaway group were a number of experienced riders. Paul Anders, formerly from Port Fairy and a previous winner of the event was closely watching any moves made by Decker and his team mate Trent Stevenson. Hamish Taylor (Northcote) and Joel Pearson (Warragul) were also riders who at times dictate the pace of the breakaway group.

At the halfway point of the race, the breakaway had dwindled in numbers down to about fifteen riders. A group of five riders including Gary Parsons (Camperdown) and Robert Tighello had initiated an attempt to catch the breakaway group the main pack had appeared to have lost hope of catching the leaders with the gap hovering between 1 and 2 minutes.

The five-man chase group persisted for around seven laps but the gap remained reasonably constant and with less than 25 kilometres to go it seemed that the winner would come from the group of leaders. It was at about this time that Decker, Anders and Pearson were able to ride away from the lead group. Attempts from the remaining riders to bridge back to the threesome failed and with the laps counting down the podium placing’s seemed to be decided. However a late burst of speed from two riders, Hamish Taylor and Matthew Goold (Ashburton) managed to succeed in reeling in the leading three but the energy used to ride across to the leaders left Taylor and Goold unable to combat a final attack from Pearson and Anders at the start of the final lap.

In a two up final sprint for the line Joel Pearson was too quick for Anders and was able to not only claim the outright victory but also the win in the Under 23 year old section. Goold claimed third from Taylor (Fourth) and an unlucky Tim Decker (Fifth).

The Port Fairy Cycling Club would no doubt be feeling confident about hosting a stage of the Herald Sun Tour, later this year. The fact that the Tour stage 6, to be held on the 21st October 2003, is around the same circuit allowed corner marshals, officials and timekeepers to hone their skills in readiness for the October showcase. Port Fairy Cycling Club President, Mark Winnen said, "The smooth and incident free running of the event on Sunday, gives both the Tour promoters and Port Fairy Cycling Club committee members great confidence leading up to the Port Fairy stage of the Sun Tour."
