Launceston 19-year-old Kharne Hammersley outfoxed a small but high quality bunch to take victory in the West Tamar club’s weekend road race.

The combined event was broken into small groups in the opening meters of the race, with an attack by Wes Sulzberger and Matt Goss. The duo was soon joined by seven other riders, which formed the group that would eventually decide all of the placings.

After a solo breakaway by Jason Andersch, Hammersley and Goss tried their luck in front but were recaptured by the remaining six riders as a hailstorm hit the race. It was during this regrouping that Hammersley made his move again and gradually built up a race winning lead in the 15 kilometre run into the finish.

Hammersley has benefited greatly from his recent work with coach, Scott Callow and has gained backing from the organisers of the Launceston International Classic for his assault on the upcoming Tattersall’s Cup series.
