Poole scoops the Pool

Perfect racing conditions helped the outmarkers take out the top places in last Sunday's Caesar's Illawarra Cycle Club handicap race. Warren Poole was chased to the line by a fast finishing Emma Ringer. Vince O'Dwyer stole third from Teegan Makowski and Mitch Harris.

Fastest time was won by Peter Jones in a course record time of 36 minutes 54 seconds. Even the riders at the slower end of the field recorded fast times.

The scratch bunch of Jones, Adam Rourke, Tim Morris, Steve Franklin and Graham Rutter worked together well catching nearly everything on the road ahead of them. Meanwhile the two minute group of Paul Kaye, Sal Caballo, Warren Poole and Pat Delahunty were swapping-off turns smoothly and reeling in the two limit groups who also had been working well. Once the three bunches combined the ten workers pulled smoothly to stay away from the chasers.

By the halfway mark the gap was less than two minutes between the combined outmarkers and the nearest pursuers. If it wasn't for their well controlled pace and the stronger riders who filled the gaps, they would have been caught. Turning at the far turn on the last lap the gap was less than a minute. Scratch had ridden through the whole field except for the ten leaders.

With only 500 metres to go Peter Vesel rode off the front but couldn't keep it going. The leading bunch upped the pace and started the sprint. Poole led out and just held off Ringer for well deserved first and second. The remaining paying places were all filled by outmarkers. Scratch hit the line for the same bunch time but just missed on the the money.

Next week's race is a 27 kilometre scratch race, group six marshalling.
