Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Southern Cross CC HandicapWaratah Park Sutherland, April 27, 2003Racing in the wet at Waratah ParkThe field was a little down at Waratah Park for this Sunday and this was due to the very wet conditions with the rain falling from about 7.00 am that morning. Today was to be the 2nd Southern Cross Point Score Race for the road season. With only 5 Point Score races this year, each race and the results will be very important to those chasing the title of Club Champion in their respective age divisions. Being a handicap, racing was hard with the "Scratchies" having to chase the "Limit Markers" very hard, if they wanted to be in with a chance or a even sniff of a win. With a field of 15 riders in the Masters division, Ross Harding (Scratch) started to chase limit (14 minutes in front) right from lap 1. Having to lap some riders more than 8 times to be on the same lap. The 10 and 12 minute bunches formed one big bunch approximately 10 laps into the race, making this a real force to chase the limit markers down. With 5 laps to go, it was going to be anyone's race. The big bunch had splintered by this time and scratch had caught the main riders , however the limit markers were still 3 laps in front. In the long run, Michelle Duvall, a new club member got up for the win in only her 2nd race ever. Other riders showing some good form early in the season included, Alan Wild, Jim Guillan, Bob Davidson and Brad Stiller. The Elite and under 19's & 17's race was to be just as entertaining with a mixture of some very experienced riders and some beginners on limit. Some of the young guys were just back from the Adelaide Superdome and the Junior National Track Championships. The pace was scorching from the start, however 30 laps of track 2 was going to sort out the men from the boys so to speak. When it got down to the business end of the race it came down to a number of riders banding together and playing team tactics to allow one rider to get away. The other junior divisions all went according to plan. There were some fine performances from a number of riders including Scott Harding, scratch marker in the U11's, Jack Bennett also from scratch in the U13's. These young boys had there work cut out for them, right from the start and like true champions, gave the race 110%. Other performers included Emma Cook, Leah Guillan, Jaryd Triggs and young Tom Matthews all rider very well in the difficult conditions....It had rained all morning. All in all, it was a good days racing by all and the challenge to become the Club Champion for 2003 continues until the next point score. Next week's racing is a graded criterium and all visitors are welcome - just bring your license.
