6th Mount Hood Classic - NE/2.2WOregon, USA, May 13-18, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - May 16: Scenic Gorge Time Trial, 18.2 milesSutherland, Goldstein take control in gorge(ous) Hood time trialBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Hood River, Oregon Sutherland continues winning form with TT winEven though Rory Sutherland (Health Net-Maxxis) said yesterday that he was feeling the effects of a race-heavy first half of the season, the affable Aussie just cannot find a way to lose this month. Coming off an overall win last week at Joe Martin, Sutherland continued his domination by stomping out the best time in today's 17.8 mile individual time trial along the Columbia River Gorge. "I'm definitely a little surprised, but I think the results from the last few days were a good confidence boost for today," Sutherland told Cyclingnews. Helping Sutherland today was the difficulty of the course which featured a long climb and fast, rolling descents. "It is a difficult course which is why I think it suited me more than others," he said. "I am a power climber that likes to go at his own pace. You didn't have to touch the brakes once on the descents." The course itself was the true headline story of the day, easily overshadowing any performance. The nearly 18 mile point-to-point course was an equally beautiful and challenging parcours that snaked along the clifs of the Columbia River. Stone fencing along the cliff edges overlooked beautiful wild flowers and spectacular vistas. "It was beautiful," said Sutherland. "It is definitely up there as the most interesting and beautiful TT courses. We never get enough of a time to look around but this whole area is amazing." The road itself was two-lanes of perfect pavement that used to be the main road before the interstate highway was built. The final few miles of the course turned onto the more historic section of the road that has since been designated a national landmark and converted into an almost too-good to be true bike path. "Who the hell has a bike path like that in the middle of nowhere," asked Sutherland. "I'm pretty damn impressed with this little piece of paradise. I'm hoping to find some time to come back and spend a few days here and just look around." Previous race leader Ben Jacques-Maynes (Bissell), winner of the flat, fast and short opening prologue, finished in second place 25 seconds behind Sutherland. He now sits 30 seconds back from Sutherland in the overall. Former race leader Darren Lill (BMC) had a good ride at 32 seconds back and is the only other rider within a minute on the overall at 31 seconds back. Sutherland's team-mate and the guy pegged to lead the team this week Phil Zajicek rode out of himself on this course last year, resulting in a second place overall. However the weather conditions today were much different and a tailwind bumped times up more than five minutes over last year. Zajicek only managed a 18th place and now sits in 11th place on the overall, 2.05 minutes behind Sutherland. "Of course he is disappointed but I have full confidence he will be going well tomorrow," said Sutherland. "I think he was hoping for himself, but he is still climbing well. For what he has been through and how much he has raced this year he is riding great. You can always have a bad day, especially for not racing and then going into a TT like that." Zajicek was recently diagnosed with Chron's Disease, which affects the gastrointestinal tract. He was withheld from competing at the Tour de Georgia because the medication needed to treat the condition was not approved by WADA in time. But HealthNet-Maxxis is still in the driver's seat here with Sutherland, and riders like Zajicek could prove to be invaluable in tomorrow's tough Wy'East road race. "You'd always like more time but to take 25 seconds out of Ben in a TT you have to be pretty pleased," said Sutherland. "Who knows if it will be enough, but I am climbing well and I feel confident with the guys I have. "Some of them sat on the front of Joe Martin for me and we have a few climbers like Phil to come in handy tomorrow," he added. Goldstein wins controversial time trial over LongoThe talk at the finish of the women's time trial was not so much about the winning ride by three-time defending champion Leah Goldstein (ValuAct Capital), or the new race leader Julie Beveridge (Aaron's), but the non-win by veteran racer Jeanie Longo-Ciprelli (River City Bicycles). Longo's bike was deemed out of regulation with a handlebar pitch angled down too far, even though Longo claimed it was the exact set-up she used for Tuesday's prologue. The estimated 45 seconds lost at the start made the difference as Goldstein beat Longo by just 18 seconds, and now sits eight seconds over Longo on the overall and seven seconds behind the new leader Beveridge. Goldstein was unaware of Longo's situation at the finish, and admitted she was surprised she won. "I felt good but I am surprised I won," she said. "I didn't think it was a stellar ride but it was good enough to win." In regards to Longo, Goldstein is confident that the French racer can make up just about any gap she wants. "Jeanie Longo is Jeanie Longo... she is just an amazing rider and will make tomorrow very difficult," she said. "I've seen her just ride away from pelotons in big races. She will make things interesting." The huge change in weather conditions did not affect Goldstein much, except that the tailwind made her time much faster compared to last year. "It was much faster this year because we had a tailwind, I think it was five minutes faster," she said. The surprise of the day, and really of the week, is seeing Aaron's Julie Beveridge in the race lead. The 19 year-old freely admitted that her riding is well above her own expectations, which was also evident by the fact she was already back at her host house when anti-doping called her requesting a sample as race leader. "I shocked myself, let's put it that way," said Beveridge. "I was prepared to come here and ride fore Felicia [Gomez] - she was second here last year and is an awesome climber and time trialist. But I have legs this week that I don't normally have." The unseasonably warm weather could have negatively affected the Canadian from Alberta, but a pre-race preparation in California helped acclimatize her. "It normally would have [affected me] but I stayed with a team-mate in Fresno last week so I could get used to the heat," she said. "It was snowing when I left Calgary!" Beveridge said her surprising form means that the team now has multiple options for tomorrow's decisive road race. "We've had two cards to play all week because of it," she noted. "We had three cards to play actually, but we lost Kristin [Sanders] yesterday." United States Road Race Champion Mara Abbot (High Road) finished fourth 39 seconds down and is the only other rider within a minute of the leader at 50 seconds down.
