6th Mount Hood Classic - NE/2.2WOregon, USA, May 13-18, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 1 - May 14: Mt. Tabor Criterium, 90/60 minutesCrit specialists Clarke, Pic make nice work of tough Hood critBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Portland, Oregon Uphill finish makes for slo-mo field sprintWhile the race manual called today's stage a criterium, the profile looked more like a circuit race. The parcours around Mt. Tabor park, a new course for the race resting on a long-since active volcano, was a tough 1.3 mile loop with 135 feet of climbing per lap. In the end the 31 laps, with a total of 4185 feet, felt somewhere in between a criterium and a circuit. The constant up-and-down of the course meant no breaks and the field sprint was a tricky curving uphill. Toyota-United played it perfectly, leading with one to go and letting its two fastest riders, Hilton Clarke and Ivan Stevic, play off each other in the sprint - and that is how they finished. "The Successful Living guys jumped us half-way up the hill," Clarke told Cyclingnews about the final kilometre. "He has such a good lead-out but we were lucky they jumped us, Stevic jumped on him and I was able to just relax. "It didn't feel like I was sprinting, it was just who had the legs in the end," he added. With one lap to go the entire Toyota-United team was on the front setting things up. "It was more of a plan to take over with half a lap to go, but once we were on course we realized we would have to go a bit earlier," Clarke said regarding the tough-to-read course. "I was waiting as long as I could behind Stevic - I didn't want to go too early and then die. "Of course I can't not try and Stevic gets beaten then I've done the wrong thing - but what else can you ask for but a one-two," he added. Large crowds lined the park's many grassy hillsides to watch the race, especially on the main climb. The relentless climbing, descending and climbing again made it difficult for breaks to get away, but also made it difficult for race leader Ben Jacques-Maynes and his Bissell team to control the constant flurry of attacks. "There were a lot of hard attacks in the beginning but it became pretty obvious that breaks weren't staying away, so once we got to the front we got the guys organized and rode tempo," he said. "It was almost too easy - you couldn't ride slow enough to let guys just sit out there and dangle to settle in. It was up and down all day." "I thought after 15 minutes Bissell had no hopes of controlling the race," said Clarke. "They cracked but then 15 minutes later they were all on the front and did a really good job controlling it." The time bonus on the finish gave Clarke the race lead by one second over his team-mate Stevic, and four seconds over Jacques-Maynes. But everyone is still looking ahead to Friday's decisive time trial to be the deciding factor. "This race is all about the time trial on Friday," said Jacques-Maynes about the strategy for tomorrow's circuit race. "So just save the energy for that." Crit champion Pic does it uphill and into yellowUnited States of America criterium champion Tina Pic (Colavita-Sutter Home) is usually the odds-on favorite for any flat and fast course. But rolling to the line for today's Mt. Tabor criterium, it would be easy to understand if fans went with a different pick. The 135 feet of climbing each lap, half of which served as the finish, made this an unusual criterium. But Pic proved the nay-sayers wrong, coming around the race leader Joanne Kiesanowski (TIBCO) for the easy win. "I was surprised you could hang onto the peloton from so far back," said Pic. "I had to come from a long way back. We got going slow enough up the last climb that you could come around, even the long way. "[Kiesanowski] was smart, she stayed to the right side but I figured I would give it a shot and come around," she added. "I knew I had to be on the inside so I led it out for longer than I normally would have," Kiesanowski said. "I was on Kim Anderson's wheel and was quite happy there because I knew if she won I could still keep the jersey. She started to fade so I knew I had to do it myself. Tina was one I knew I had to watch." But she watched Pic ride by on the outside and into the leader's jersey. "Cheerwine had it organized and I was just jumping around wheels," said Pic. "Then Jojo went with about 100 metres and I went with her." The new course made it difficult for everyone to predict what would happen. Veteran racer Jeannie Longo worked on the front for much of the race, trying to get a break going and make it difficult for the other riders. But riding virtually alone against some major teams was a futile effort. "It was a very short race on a short course," Longo said. "I thought maybe there could be a break but I have no team-mates so it is always very hard for me. There were three big teams controlling for the leaders." Still Longo is one to watch once the road turns upwards. "This race reminds me of races like the Coors Classic; good times," she said. Tomorrow's circuit race has one major climb up to the finish each 18.7-mile lap, with mountain points every time. The men will go 4.5 laps for 85 miles and the women willdo 3.5 laps for 66 miles.
