International Tour de Toona - NEUSA, July 23-29, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - July 28: Altoona/Blair Country Road Race, 158.8 kmTEAm Lipton takes three; Armstrong moves into yellowBy Kirsten Robbins and Mark Zalewski in Altoona, Pennsylvania The climb over Blue Knob has historically set the overall ranking with a front group of strong contenders cresting the top while the remaining field is left in pieces behind. This time around 2006 Tour de Toona winner Kristin Armstrong (TEAm Lipton) made her winning move after she followed Mara Abbott (Webcor-Builders) over the decisive climb. Abbott pulled herself and Armstrong into a maximum time gap of five minutes on the field, an effort that started with Abbott as the virtual leader on the road but ended with Armstrong in the yellow jersey, Abbott in second and Seehafer in third. By default of being off the front, Armstrong picked up full points over two mountains climbs to take the polka dot climbers jersey. With her leading teammate Kori Seehafer behind, Armstrong was unable to help increase the gap between her break and the group behind. Abbott pulled the pair for 30 miles after they crested Blue Knob. The world time trial champion attacked Abbott over the last mountains climb and increased her gap to two minutes on the descent to Stage 6 victory. "I really wanted to keep Kori in the yellow jersey today because I want other girls to have the opportunity to race their bikes," Armstrong said. "Today we knew it would come down to the typical climbers and so I needed to be on Mara. It was hard to figure out what the Webcor strategy would be because they have such a strong team all together. "Once Mara and I had a one-minute gap I told her that I was sorry and that the rest was her responsibility," Armstrong added. "I have a lot of respect for Mara because she is so strong and the type of rider who likes to race her bike hard with a good attitude." When the pair reached a time gap close to five minutes, Abbott turned into the virtual leader on the road, eight second ahead of Armstrong. "Once I realized we had gained a lot of time I had to pick a good opportunity to get away so I jumped over the last QOM and thank God it was all descending from there," Armstrong said with regards to the difficult terrain during the stage. "I needed to make up time because I didn't want our time difference to be down to the seconds going into the crit tomorrow" A 20 plus rider group flew down the descent in pursuit of the third place, scooped up by Abbott's teammate Amber Rais. "It was so exciting for me to be sitting at the side after I crossed the line and to watch my teammate coming down the hill in third," Abbott said. "It was also really nice to be on the podium with her." The start of the 158 kilometre race fell into traditionally high speeds over the smaller of two circuits with all teams vying for an early breakaway to gain time before the decisive six kilometre climb up to Blue Knob. The first break split 10 kilometres from the start with approximately 12 riders and all teams represented it looked to be the early move, but it was maybe a little too early for the general classification contenders and the break was brought back. Several more breaks formed but they too fell at the demise of the chasing peloton. A pre-climb break set off after a short lull in the peloton, 10 miles from the base. Webcor-Builders drove the speeds of the main bunch into the base of the climb using every bullet to launch Abbott off the front. "I had a lead out from my teammates to try to get a gap on Kori into the climb," Abbott said. "And I just went as hard as I could from the bottom to the top to see what would happen." Armstrong was impressed by the green team's lead out , describing it as 'screaming fast'. "When the Webcor girls pulled off after their lead out I couldn't help but thing how lucky they were that their day was done," Armstrong laughed. After the climb a chase group formed that contained all top ranked GC riders but continued to swell to 30 riders on the way to the second QOM. No organised chases were forthcoming as teams looked at each other to take the responsibility in reducing the time gap that had substantially grown to Abbott and Armstrong. Most of the disorganisation was due to - outnumbered riders, and conflicting team tactics but mainly tired legs. "I feel like some teams lost a lot of things today that could have been in their control," Armstrong said. "I think there was a lot of depth in the group behind and a lot could have been done to bring back some time on us. But I also truly believe that people were tired and maybe people were scared that there were two more climbs ahead so they were trying to conserve their energy." Though Armstrong took the stage victory and moved into the leaders jersey, TEAm Lipton's director Mike Tamayo was displeased with the way the peloton chose to end the toughest and last decisive stage of the Tour de Toona. "It was disappointing to see the women's race quit and not dig deep enough," Tamayo said. "We are disappointed we won the race and the rest of the field quit behind. The women just gave up racing, didn't pursue it and conceded first and second." Health Net-Maxxis executes overall, Tolleson takes sprint winThe Tour de 'Toona prides itself on its women's race, featuring the same courses as the men, prime afternoon start times and even slightly more prize money. However, the battle waging over in the pro men's race this week was likely the best domestic race of the year - with this race being just about the only one to feature all of the top NRC teams with their top road squads, standing toe-to-toe trading punches. Today's final road stage was make or break for race leader Karl Menzies and his Health Net-Maxxis team, with three KOM climbs between him and the likely overall victory. As he promised the team rode themselves into the ground for the man from Tasmania, getting him over the major climb within striking distance and then delivering him to the line for nearly another stage win - only to be pipped on the line by a flying Taylor Tolleson (Team Slipstream-Chipotle). "It's a huge relief," said Menzies after the race. "The pressure and stress... If you want to see a team win, this was it." There were no secrets to the team tactics today, for Health Net or the other teams. Almost everyone knows this stage well, with the first KOM up Blue Knob the key. "The plan was we knew it was going to go away on the first climb, and Rory was to mark that," he said. "Then I had everyone else around me. Nathan O'Neill got me up it and Frank Pipp was across with us. Then Matty Crane and Tim Johnson came back." "We knew Navigators and Toyota were going to stack that group and work, Navigators came out swinging, attacking and attacking. I had O'Neill and Pipp, but O'Neill is enough! So there was no panic." While the course was essentially the same, the key first climb was not quite as long as in previous years, with the final ascent up to the ski resort not included. "Oh for sure it's an easier climb," said Menzies. "That's the race course and we knew it would be easier than last year but the same situation as last year." Still, at 82.5kg and 186cm, Menzies admits he does not exactly float uphill. But with the team he had around him today that, along with whatever his rivals did, didn't seemed to matter. "We had certain cards we wanted to play today, hoping that the stage would be hard enough," said Navigators Insurance's Ben Day. "Blue Knob was the hardest climb of the day and we had a good group of 11 guys over that, with 8 guys trading off and Rory [Sutherland] sitting on the back of that." "I thought we might have been able to pull that away, but then all of a sudden it was yellow jersey group at eight seconds! Karl had some great help today and he's riding really strong. We threw everything we had at him but the day wasn't hard enough to isolate him. Hats off to Health Net, they rode really strong. They had guys coming back all day." The man leading the charge up and over Blue Knob was one of Menzies' biggest threats, Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United). "We did our best to go through our tactics," said Baldwin. "Burke Swindlehurst did an awesome job killing it at the bottom of the climb. We were under the impression that it was the same climb up Blue Knob - the profile in the bible was incorrect. It definitely changed our tactics, but we threw down as best we could." "But I can't think of a scenario where we could have driven it any faster - we had 10 guys really committed," said Baldwin, referring to the lead group over the climb. "We all knew the drill that it was the only way to win the race. It was amazing how quickly those guys came back. I expected them to come back but not so fast, it's a testament to how well Nathan and Tim Johnson [rode]. He's MVP, he got back on and kept pulling." After Menzies' group rejoined the leaders, it was Navigators who continued to put on the pressure, with multiple attacks from Valeriy Kobzarenko. "After the first KOM they just responded," said Kobzarenko. "Menzies is really strong and he has a strong team. Maybe the first climb was different, it's less, but they are unbelievable, finishing with that many guys." On the final and easier climb of the three, Kobzarenko was shadowed by Sutherland and Menzies. This set up a fast downhill charge to the finish line. "The last 10km was downhill until a left hand turn with two kilometres to go," said Tolleson. "There are a couple of rollers after that and then a straight shot, downhill fast finish. A couple of guys put in some good accelerations on the rollers but then I was looking for Menzies' and Rory's wheels. I got on it and broke between Menzies and [Vitoria]." Having survived the barrage of attacks, Menzies had little time to plan for a sprint finish, but still managed third. "There are so many different thoughts in my head today," he said. "We wanted to keep it safe more than anything. I was trying to get over Dionne, but then Tolleson came by me at a rate of knots and nutted me on the line. But we wanted the yellow jersey most." Charles Dionne's (Colavita-Sutter Home) second place does extend his lead in the points competition, but does not replace a stage win for him. "I'm not too happy, I wanted to win," he said. "We had so many guys from our team on the front, and getting over the climbs. The second day of the race I didn't get over it but I was coming from Brazil. But today I got over in the second group and had four guys working to bring me back. But Anthony [Colby] got the climbers jersey and I kept the sprinters jersey. I thought I would win the stage but I lost it by a couple of inches!" Colby's polka dot jersey became official today, with only the criterium left. But the jersey was not first on his priorities entering the race this week. "I got in that break the first day and grabbed some KOM points. I've never really gone after a KOM jersey before, but based on my results it's clear that I am a climber." Arguably his best result on the year came on top of a certain mountain in Georgia. "I was tied with Darren Lill and I wanted to follow him and take him right at the line. Then I just did everything I could to get every point I could. Menzies is on the verge of a big win, needing only to finish the criterium tomorrow. But the size of the win is only made bigger in the context of his family back home, with his father terminally ill from cancer. "That's the motivation, the one main reason I'm here," he said, struggling to get the words out. "His exact words when I left was... he just wanted me to come back over and win some races... so that's what I'm here to do. I talked to him last night and... we did it."
