International Tour de Toona - NEUSA, July 23-29, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - July 24: Vintondale - Cairnbrook, 78.2 kmPowers 'descends' into the yellow jerseyThe women's peleton may have been caught off guard by the difficulty of the new stage but not by former alpine skier Alison Powers (Colavita/Sutter Home) when she rode away from the field on a technical rain stricken descent to take a solo win. Alison Testroete (Expresscopy.com) won the sprint ahead of Kori Seehafer (TEAm Lipton) out of a dwindled front peloton. Katheryn Curi (Webcor Builders) gave up her leader's jersey after the teams win in yesterday's team time trial, to Powers after she finished fifty-eight seconds ahead of the peloton receiving an extra eight-second time bonus for crossing the line first. Four Webcor-Builders' are now trailing Powers' lead by seven seconds. Powers and her team were happy with the win and the jersey after the stage "having the leaders jersey plays well into our team because at the end of the race we want to keep the jersey in our team, it doesn't matter if it is me or not," Powers said. "We can put other teams on the defensive a little bit during the longer stages coming up." The stage started with one hundred riders but disintegrated over the first climb nineteen kilometers into the seventy-eight kilometre stage. World time trial champion Kristin Armstrong (TEAm Lipton) took full points over the climb in the front group that contained some thirty riders. This group was never brought back by the main peloton as it continued on through the undulating terrain on the way to the finishing city of Cairnbrook. Armstrong also took second place point over the final climb of the day and the lead of the Queen of the mountains competition. Just before an intermediate sprint Powers may her move, gaining time on the steep decent that followed. "We talked about my attacking on the descent because it is my strength," Powers said. "The rain played into my advantage because my fear level with speed is a lot lower than the other girls because of my ski racing. I don't mind being wet, descending in the rain while not being able to see - that's because of down hill ski racing." "I think my personal 'slow' speeds on a descent are still fast for other people in the rain," Powers added. "It was also easier to be alone in the rain because I was not worried about everyone else around me." Powers gap grew to a maximum of two and half minutes making her the virtual leader on the road as Webcor-Builders began to organize them selves on the front to try and reduce the gap before the end. Powers admitted that she did not think she would gain as much time as she did, thinking that there would be a high-speed chase behind her. "I was wondering why in the world they were giving me so much of a gap," Powers said. "I thought for sure the stage win was with in reach but then I started to think about the leader's jersey too. With fifteen kilometers to go I started giving it my all and hoped that I could stay one minute ahead." Although Webcor-Builders' Katheryn Curi lost the early lead, she is confident her team can get it back in the later stages and almost relieved not to be wearing it going into tomorrow's one hundred and sixty kilometre stage. "There are still five really hard stages left. Today my team did a great job of minimizing our losses and maintaining what we wanted - to stay close to the lead," Curi said. "We were not too worried about Alison being off but when the gap grew we got on the front to keep it in check. The rain added a different element with the descent and Alison has phenomenal descending skills. I wish I could watch her descend because I'm sure it is beautiful." Curi also commented on the new route, changed from the Johnston road race that had traditionally started the Tour de Toona. "The new course was great," Curi said. "It was hard because this race was a shocker with the first climb that caused some major separations in the field." Powers accumulated full point in the single intermediate sprint and at the finish to also take the lead in the sprint point's competition. Health Net-Maxxis passes the baton
The day began with Nathan O'Neill, the Australian time trial champion wearing the race leader's jersey. The day finished with Karl Menzies sprinting to a stage win, and the leader's jersey, courtesy of the time bonus on the line. But after the poor weather conditions at the close of today's stage, O'Neill better run the jersey through the laundry before passing it to his teammate. Menzies returns to 'Toona after losing the race lead in 2006 when his chase group was led off course in the final road stage. And he is quite motivated to set things right. "Yeah, I am really motivated after last year," he said. "I really want this." The overall picture did not change much with Menzies' time bonus. Most of the top teams' top riders finished in the main group, and not in the many other groups that had more trouble negotiating the tough KOM climbs and the seemingly endless tougher rollers in between. Following close behind Health Net-Maxxis is Toyota-United with the duo of Chris' -- Baldwin and Wherry, that is. “We have to be patient,” team director Harm Jansen said. “Tomorrow’s stage has a hard finish. There are two teams with some serious contenders for the overall and we have to race smart – very smart.” The other team Jansen referred to is Navigators Insurance, with defending champion Sergey Lagutin. The team looked strong today with two of the four break riders in Valeriy Kobzarenko and Matt Cooke, and sending another up the road near the catch of the break to take the second KOM points with Darren Lill.
The other riders in the break represented a number of other teams that could challenge -- Slipstream-Chipotle with Ian MacGregor and Colavita-Sutter Home's Anthony Colby. However, they only managed to reach little more than a minute on the Health Net controlled field, not wanting to let too much happen in the short 78.2km stage. The catch was timed to perfection with the field cresting the last KOM with just 15km to go. After descending some gnarly hairpin turns with stone walls greeting the riders who might overcook the turns, the skies turned black and the typical afternoon summer showers began. Coming into the finish the rain made organizing the sprint difficult. Menzies keyed off of Charles Dionne (Colavita-Sutter Home) passing him with Lagutin right behind at the line. Hopefully not foreshadowing anything, Menzies flatted as he crossed the line for the win. Maybe he has the bad luck out of the way early. Tomorrow’s stage is another point-to-point road race, but much longer and with two significant climbs, including up Blue Knob state park, which will surely shake the GC picture a little more.
