New Superweek venue, same Superweek speed

Martin rides away for win, overall changes

The small burg of Blue Island, a blue collar town bordering Chicago, played host to its first Superweek race this year - giving the riders a flat, four corner speed course with wide roads and sweeping turns. This NRC race saw a few more entries from last night's opener, but that did not matter to Paul Martin (Texas Roadhouse) who bridged up to the main break and then summarily rode them off his wheel as he soloed to the win.

Martin, who just last weekend won a master's road national championship, is definitely used to riding alone on the front. "I almost want to keep that quiet - don't want people to know I'm old enough to be a master!" he said jokingly. "This is the only way I can win a race like this."

Earlier in the race a group of four seemed to have the race in hand, including one of Martin's teammate Jon Puffer. But the four never made the complete lap of the field, signalling to Martin and a few others that bridging to the break was an option. "[Frank] Dierking (Abercrombie & Fitch) and I knew that the break was not going to lap," said Martin. "When [the chase] caught it split, but some guys including Puffer were able to come back up."

This made it a break of seven, which rolled for a couple of laps. Then Martin went for a $200 prime and that was the last anyone saw of him. "I just rolled away and I guess they hesitated," he said.

Winning the field sprint was Aussie Jonathan Cantwell (Kahala-Lagrange) who finished second for the second day in a row. However, his consistent placing took the leader's jersey away from Andy Crater (Wheel & Sprocket) for the time being, leaving Crater with the red points jersey to wear.

Benjamin begins title defence

Defending Superweek women's overall champion Kelly Benjamin (Cheerwine) wasted no time in showing the other ladies who the favourite was for the week, leaving her lead-out behind at 700 metres down the long final stretch to take the first race win of the series.

"All three of us only came together with a half-lap to go," said Benjamin about her team's tactics. "It's such a long back and front stretch and the other teams were just waiting for us to take the lead." The delayed lead-out played to Benjamin's advantage, as the strong sprinter could easily move within the field to fight for any wheel she wanted.

"Rachel and Sarah were perfect - it was 1-2-3 of us into the final corner," Benjamin said. "I probably should have been a little more patient but I made sure to put it in the gutter on the far side," she said regarding the strong crosswinds on the finish stretch. The racing continues tomorrow with another flat and fast criterium, but with a few more tight turns to mix things up.
